Edith Horn Obituary

HORN
Edith Williams Horn, 95, passed away peacefully in her sleep at home in Seminole, Florida on Friday, October 26, 2012. She was the third of four daughters born to the late New York City architect Edgar I. Williams and his wife Hulda Olson Williams in Rutherford, NJ where she grew up. A graduate of Elmira College, Edith began her career as a chemist for Ponds Extract Company in New York City. In 1941, she married the late Dr. Edward Charles Horn, former professor and chairman of the zoology department at Duke University in Durham, NC. They settled in Durham in 1946 and raised three children there - Dr. Edward G. Horn of Voorheesville, NY, William C. Horn of St. Petersburg, FL, and Kathy M. Horn Mittler of San Antonio, TX. Edith was a working mother ahead of her time and ultimately retired from the biochemistry department at Duke University as a neurospera genetics research technician - a career of which she was very proud. Throughout her life and in retirement she was a tireless volunteer and supporter of environmental restoration projects and for a time was a volunteer docent for the Museum of Natural History in Raleigh, NC. She is survived by her three children, six grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren. No formal service is planned by the family; but rather they will all be celebrating her life with and in the privacy of their respective families. Since no formal ceremony is planned, and as Edith was an avid lover of dogs throughout her life; should anyone wish to send a remembrance in her name, we would like to suggest Dog Town, a subsidiary of Best Friends Animal Society in Angel Canyon, Utah ( http://www.bestfriends.org/Get-involved/Donate/Give-a-Tribute-Gift/ ). Edith was an elegant lady who was respected and loved by most who met her and will be missed.

It was my pleasure to assist Ms. Horn during her last days, and my life was, and will ever be ever enriched by having known her.

My condolences to Edith's family. She enriched my life in many ways through her wisdom and humor. I always enjoyed visiting with her during her years at Patriot Heights. She will be remembered as a gentlewoman by me and others that shared a few of her latter years.
