Eliseo Martinez Obituary

Eliseo Lino Martinez (Cheo) was born on September 23, 1938, in San Diego, Texas, to Concepción and Ascencio Martinez. He passed away on August 13, 2022.

Eliseo grew up in San Diego, Texas, a town that nurtured pride in his Mexican American heritage. He studied drama at North Texas State College and the University of Texas at Austin. He moved to Mexico City where he founded Theatre Workshop, an English language community theatre. He returned to Texas with his wife, Miriam, where he worked as an interpreter at the Federal Courthouse in San Antonio until his retirement.

While Eliseo grew up in San Diego, Texas, he also counted Falcón, Texas, as home. Falcón is the location of the ranch that has been in his family since 1767. Sitting on a hilltop and watching the sun set over Falcon Lake and Mexico was one of the joys he loved to share with his family.
Eliseo is survived by his wife, Miriam Gerald Martinez, his sons--Eliseo David Martinez (married to Maritza Morales Martinez) and Christopher Martinez (married to Veronica Cervera Martinez)-and his five beloved granddaughters-Sky Martinez, Emma Martinez, Elia Martinez, Annabelle Martinez, and Alyssa Martinez.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 20 at 3:00 pm, at University Presbyterian Church, 300 Bushnell, San Antonio, 78212.

The service will be streamed at the following link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NlzE0I-tEas

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that Eliseo be remembered via donations to University Presbyterian Church.

I was one of Eliseos students the second year he taught (1960). He had me in his theater class for three years and he instilled the love of literature and theater which I have carried my entire life. His laugh and voice is still in my head. I´m so grateful for him and to see his lovely family. Bless you all and I am truly sorry for our loss.

Mr. Martinez was my drama teacher, at Haltom High School, Haltom City, Tx, class of 1962.There are not enough words or room in this space to tell you what a very large part he played in my life. He and his wife and son, David, visited me and my family while we were living in Austin, Tx. I have held that visit close to my heart. My sincere and heartfelt sympathy to his family. There are so many memories of Cheo. We started kindergarden together at the St. Francis de Paula Catholic school in San Diego, TX. Then on to same high school in San Diego. Everyone liked Cheo. He always wore a smile. I remember him very interested in dramatic arts and was always involved in our hi school plays. It was a pleasure to see each other again during our 50th hi school reunion. May God bless Cheo and keep him in his kingdom forever. My condolences to all his family.
With heartfelt sympathy, Alan and Gloria (Martinez) Stickle.
