Ferdinand Burket Obituary

January 9, 1933 - March 27, 2018
Ferdinand "Ferdie" John Burket, IV, of Jourdanton, Texas, passed away at age 85 on Tuesday, March 27, 2018, surrounded by his family. He was born January 9, 1933, in San Antonio, Texas, to Ferdinand John Burket, III and Anna Regina Zotz Burket.

Raised in San Antonio, Ferd was a 1951 graduate of St. Gerard High School. He excelled in football, baseball and basketball, and he earned a full football scholarship to the University of Texas. While at UT he played quarterback and was a proud member of the National Championship Team of 1951 that won the Cotton Bowl.
After an injury, Ferd returned home to rehab, and later joined the US Army, playing football for them in Germany. After his military service, he received a football scholarship to Southeastern Oklahoma State University, where he met and later became engaged to the love of his life, Glynda Ray. A year later Ferd and Glynda were married.
Ferd was drafted by the Baltimore Colts in the 14th round in 1959. He played for the Colts, followed by play for the Saskatchewan Roughriders and Montreal Alouettes for a total of six years. While in the Canadian Football League (CFL), he set records for most yards rushing, longest punt and most touchdowns (5) in a single game; some of these records still stand today. Ferd's accomplishments in sports were acknowledged by these honors: St.Gerard's "Athlete of the Half-Century" and inductions into these Halls of Fame: St. Gerard High School, Southeastern Oklahoma State University, and Pleasanton High School.
After a career-ending injury in the CFL, Ferd and Glynda returned to Texas, where he continued his love of sports as a coach, Athletic Director, and teacher at Pleasanton High School. He also invested his time and savings in his treasured career as a rancher and cattleman, surpassed only by his most important time spent in being a loving, supportive husband and father.
Those who knew Ferd would say "he was as tough as nails with a heart of gold". He was also humble, hard-working, loyal and a man of deep conviction and strong morals.
Ferd is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Glynda Ray Burket, son Ferdinand John Burket V and fiancée, Melissa Martin Doss; and daughters, Lea Ann Burket Lake and husband Michael and Beth Burket McIntyre and husband Spencer. His grandchildren also survive him: Landon Lake, Lucas Lake, Morgan McIntyre, Josh Burket, Jake Burket, and Mitchell McIntyre; plus his brother James Louis Burket and wife Carol, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation for Ferd will be on Friday, April 6, 2018, from 2 - 9 PM at Hurley Funeral Home, Pleasanton. Family will receive visitors from 5-7 PM, preceding the 7 PM rosary. The funeral service will be on Saturday, April 7th at 10 AM at St. Matthew Catholic Church in Jourdanton, followed by burial at the Jourdanton City Cemetery.
Those desiring may offer a tribute to Ferd at the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 841125, Dallas, TX, 75284-1125 The family wishes to acknowledge Amada North San Antonio, Encompass Health and the loving, committed care given by the following: Amanda Dimas-Bonilla, Greg Hernandez, Gabriela Medrano, Cat Norton, Pam Pietras.

Carol,

We were saddened to hear of your loss. Marvin and I both marveled at Ferdie's accomplishments in the sports field. We had no idea he had so many accolades. The obituary was very well written and that is probably one of your accomplishments. We are praying for all of you and hoping you can find some consolation in all of the great memories he created with all of you.

What a great man Mr. Burket was! He was such a supportive dad and I remember seeing him at all his kids' sporting events, cheering proudly from the stands. Sending prayers of peace to Mrs. Burket, Ferdie, Lea Ann, Beth, and the entire Burket family. He was one of the best!

Sharing in your sadness as you remember Ferdie. We know he will be greatly missed by everyone. He was so talented and special to so many people. We are so happy to have known him. I enjoyed hearing many stories from my boss in Calgary who was a great fan and knew the statistics on his records in football. Thinking of you Glynda, Beth, Spencer, Morgan, Mitchell and your entire family. Much love, Norm and Lana McIntyre

Burket Family,
Coach Burket was a great man. His passing brings back so many memories. He was head football coach when G and I were seniors (G was at the rival school). Coach was up in the stands one day watching practice and noticed what some Jourdanton High School "geniuses" had done. They had somehow managed to write "JHS" using fertilizer on the field. I don't know how he felt at the time, but he was laughing as he recounted the story years later. We pray that you will find comfort in knowing this beloved, big man is resting in the arms of the Lord.

My deepest most heartfelt condolences to Beth and all of Mr Burket's family. I know you will miss him dearly. My prayers to you in this time of deep, deep sorrow.

To the Family of Coach Burket, I was so sorry to hear of the passing of this great man. Countless lives, including mine, have been touched, shaped and guided by this man. He taught life lessons, even on the basketball court, for which I will always be grateful. I have so many fond memories of this man, most of which I can not repeat in a public setting, but he was a hero to so many of us. He was tough, caring, funny and fair. I am a better person because our lives crossed paths and I am so happy that we were able to visit just a year or so ago. I know you will miss him, but know that many will join in that with you.

Although I may not have known Mr. Burket personally, I am blessed to know both Beth and Lea Ann. His daughters are the epitome of class. They are both so kind-hearted and considerate. I was witness to the incredible love and respect they have for their parents. I can only imagine that Mr. Burket was an incredible man to have raised two such amazing daughters. Hold onto the happy memories, share them often. This is what keeps him alive in your hearts and minds, and he will continue to live on, through you. My thoughts and prayers for you all.
