Frederick Jay Whitecotton, 75, passed away on October 21, 2021. Fred was born May 25, 1946 in Loma Linda, California. He was the son of Lucile Cram and Jay Whitecotton, Jr. who met during WWII at Norton Air Base in California. When the war ended, they moved to Batesville, Texas to live on the family cattle ranch where Fred spent his early years. Then in 1953 his father, Jay, was killed in an airplane crash. In 1956 his mother, Lucile, married Darwin W. Suttle and the family moved to Uvalde, TX where Fred attended school and then graduated from Uvalde High School in 1964. He studied at Southwestern University in Georgetown, TX for two semesters and graduated from the University of Texas at El Paso with his Bachelor's Degree in Journalism. Fred obtained his Master's Degree in Photojournalism from East Texas State University in Commerce, TX. In 1970 he helped develop the Photography Department at San Antonio College where he spent his entire career teaching until retirement. Fred always had a passion for photography and especially loved taking photos of wildlife.
Fred married Bette Detwiler in 1966 and they had two daughters, Susan Elizabeth (Lisa) and Kathryn Leigh. Fred is survived by and will be forever missed by his daughter Lisa and husband Sobek Wilkiewicz, four grandchildren; Nicolas Wilson and wife Dulce, Jason Wilson, Aidan Wilkiewicz and Morgan Wilkiewicz, two great granddaughters; Arabella Wilson and Daisy Wilson, and his brother Franklin. Fred joins his daughter Kathryn in Heaven, who passed recently in August from a long battle with cancer.
Fred also leaves behind many wonderful friends and extended family members. His unfailing charm and sense of humor won him friends throughout his life. He was a great conversationalist and story-teller. Our lives are less colorful and vibrant in his absence. Fred loved hunting and fishing on his ranch, scuba-diving, spending time with friends, and always had a camera in tow to capture it all.
