Gary Peterson Obituary
February 5, 1941 - March 29, 2025
Gary Donald Peterson, 84, passed away In San Antonio on March 29, 2025. Gary was born on February 5,1941 to Don and Margaret (Prieve) Peterson of Hutchinson, Minnesota. He spent his early years there and graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1959.
Gary started his college football career at the University of Minnesota. In 1960 he moved to Texas to play football for Texas Lutheran College in Seguin. After TLC he became a graduate assistant teaching and coaching at Bemidji State College in Bemidji, MN.
After his college career, Gary moved to San Antonio. He was a popular football coach and teacher who taught for decades in the San Antonio area and was honored as "San Antonio Coach of The Year" in 1976.
Gary was the brother-in-law of Robert E Lee, Rice University and Vikings football great, Tommy Kramer of San Antonio.
He is survived by his former wife, Joyce Kramer Peterson of San Antonio and their son, Scott Thomas Peterson, wife, Chanda and sons, Tate and Ty of Dallas and Don Kirchoff, Joyce's husband,.
Additional survivors include his sister, Mary Peterson of Fargo, ND, Gary's wife, Marilyn Peterson and family of San Antonio and the Kramer family – Tommy Kramer, Patsy Kramer Robbins, Mary Kramer Peterson, George Kramer, Mike Kramer, Joseph Kramer, and Eva Kramer LeCroy of San Antonio and numerous extended relatives..
Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Don and Margaret {Prieve) Peterson of Hutchinson, MN, his sister, Carol Cleary of Alexandria, Virginia and his brother, Bruce Peterson of Hutchinson, MN.
"Pete", as Gary was affectionately known by friends and colleagues was a true man's man. A "Hero" to his son and "Pops" to his grandsons, he was always there when help was needed. Gary was a fantastic chef, enjoyed woodworking and fishing. His legacy will live on through his kindness, his unwavering Christian faith, his moral compass and his love for others.
