On Thursday, March 30, 2023, Geraldine Straughan Thornton McGarraugh died peacefully at her home surrounded by her children at the young age of 96.

Gerry was born in San Antonio, Texas on December 27, 1926, to Marguerite and Dwight Straughan. She attended the University of Texas and was a Chi Omega there until she met and fell in love with the love of her life, Dr. Mel Thornton in 1947. Gerry and Mel's life was full raising 6 children, traveling on many ski and car vacations across the US, Cavalier trips, tennis and bridge at the SACC, Thursday afternoons and weekends at Lake Breeze Ski Lodge, and the Catholic Guild composed of their nearest and dearest friends.
Gerry was preceded in death by her husband of 38 years, Mel; her parents Marguerite and Dwight Straughan; her sister Cynthia Newman; and her second husband, Maury McGarraugh. She is survived by her six children, Cyndy Thornton Peacock (Bobby), Margo Thornton Harrod (Gary), Dr. Mark Lee Thornton (Carolyn), Melanie Thornton Frazier (David), Felice Thornton Crocker (Dow), and Amy Thornton Hinson (Jim); 19 grandchildren; and 30 great grandchildren. Also surviving her is her beloved sister, Dorothea Straughan Gibbs (Larry).

To know Gerry was to love her. Her beautiful blue eyes were sparkling till the end. She loved her family fiercely but more than that she loved our Dad and is finally resting in Heaven with him.
A celebration of her life will be on Wednesday, April 19, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. at St Anthony de Padua Catholic Church, 102 Lorenz Rd. 78209. Father Kevin Shanahan, M.S.C., officiating.

The family would like to thank her precious caregivers, Marisela Zuniga, Yesica Sanchez and Laura Rodriguez, for tending to her every need for so long and for loving our sweet mom. We would also like to thank her doctor, Jennifer Wallace M.D., Amber Flores with Amedisys Hospice, Brenda Jaye, RN at Faith Private Duty Homecare, and faithful Beth Baetz for bringing her communion weekly.
