Gerardine Frost Obituary

Gerardine "Gerry" Frost
December 8, 1950 - November 29, 2023
Gerardine "Gerry" Frost, a visionary artist and beloved educator, passed away on November 29, 2023, in San Antonio, Texas, at the age of seventy-two due to complications of ALS. Born on December 8, 1950, in Ellicottville, New York, Gerry's artistic journey began at Trinity University, where she developed a lifelong passion for multimedia art.
Her artistic endeavors flourished at Cranbrook Academy of Art, where she earned her MFA. Gerry's pioneering work in multimedia installations, blending film and digital media with traditional art forms, set her apart in the 1970s art scene. Her installations, requiring viewers to immerse themselves in the experience, displayed her innovative approach that melded sculpture, film, and theater.
Gerry's commitment to art was paralleled by her dedication to education. She shared her vast knowledge through lectures and mentoring, nurturing future generations of artists. Her rich teaching career included various roles, from an adjunct professor in art and design to a guest lecturer in art history.
Her impact extended beyond the classroom. Gerry volunteered with children and women prisoners in Lima, Peru, and established an art studio in China, fostering cultural exchange. In San Antonio, she chaired the Historic Preservation Committee for the Monte Vista Historical Association, displaying her dedication to community and heritage.
Gerry's notable career milestones included her first film and room installation, "Studio" at Cranbrook; "Gallery" and "Room 311," both shown at the San Antonio Museum of Art; the acclaimed "Postal Desde El Peru" in Lima; and her bilingual lecture on art and technology in China. Her work "In Remembrance of 1917" for the San Antonio Tricentennial was a discerning reflection of historical events that reflected her ability to intertwine art with history, creating a narrative that spoke volumes.
Gerry married Leo Rodriguez in July of 1980 and had a very loving and happy marriage with lots of great adventures as they lived in Peru, China, and multiple cities across the U.S. Wherever she was, Gerry invested in those around her and brought her charm, beauty, and grace to the people and the place.
Gerry is survived by her husband Leo "Lee" Rodriguez, son Andrew Huebner, daughter-in-law Brittany, and grandchildren Brandon and Blakely. Her siblings, Mary M. Frost Contie; Bill Frost; Pat Frost de la Cruz and Roy; Christopher Frost; Cathy Frost Scott and Steve; Mike Frost; and Ed Frost and Feather, will remember her as a source of inspiration and strength. Gerry also leaves Leo's siblings, Elvy Wheeler, Ron and Bobbie Rodriguez, and Therese Luderus behind, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
In Gerry's own words, "artists don't retire," reflecting her belief in the perpetual evolution of artistry. Her life was a testament to this ethos, filled with continual creativity and a deep connection to the people and the world around her. Gerry Frost's passing is a loss to both the art world and the community, but her legacy will live on in those she touched through her art, teaching, and friendships.
Her family would also like to express deep gratitude for the kindness of the caregivers who provided great caring and compassion: first and foremost, Leo's siblings and niece Lisa Purser, Julia Ridgeway-Diaz, MD, as well as Angel Boggus, Rachel Spoon, Danielle Rodriguez, and Damita Smith.
A celebratory service will be held at the Margarite B. Parker Chapel at Trinity University on Saturday, January 27, 2024, at 10:30 a.m. The service will be preceded by a visitation beginning at 9:30 a.m.

Our deep condolences on your loss. This is a sad time as you miss Gerry so much. The more you love someone, the harder the grief. The grief doesn´t go away but the wonderful memories soften the pain until your mind goes to those moments instead of to sorrow. The love of your great family and friends can help carry you through the tough times. Know that we are here for you whenever or whatever you need.
