Glen Erp Obituary

February 15, 1931 - November 8, 2017
At 10:45am on Wednesday, November 8th, Major Glen D. Erp, USAF, Retired "slipped the surly bonds of earth . . . and touched the face of God" at the Army Residence Community in San Antonio, TX.

He was born February 15, 1931 in Madison, MN to C. Wilhelm and Loretta (Murray) Erp, the seventh of eight children. He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and two sisters.

He joined the US Air Force as an Aviation Cadet in 1955 (Class 56-S) and earned his pilot wings. Primarily stationed in Texas, he also served in Vietnam, Washington, DC and Anchorage, AK. In Vietnam, he flew the first operational gunship, the AC-47 (aka "Puff the Magic Dragon") and was awarded numerous Air Medals and the Distinguished Flying Cross.

On March 9, 1957, he married his adored and adoring wife, Margery Henry of Houston, TX and they recently celebrated 60 years of marriage. His hobbies included golf, bowling, cruises, and a 44-year passion for the Spurs as an inaugural season ticket holder.

Following his retirement from the Air Force, he began a 20-year career with the City of San Antonio as a Programmer/Analyst. In retirement, he became a master house husband.

He loved God, country, family and friends. Until he developed Parkinson's (believed to be from his exposure to Agent Orange in Vietnam), he lived a blessed, happy and active life. A fantastic husband, father, grandfather and friend, he is survived by his wife, Margery, his three children, Jeff (Shirley) Erp, Glenda (Robert) Bastian, and Cyndi (Daniel) Long, as well as six grandchildren, Sarah (Michael) Burke, Greg (Alyssa) Erp, Jon and Curtis Bostick, and Robert and Chris Bastian.

Services will be held at Christ Lutheran Church of Alamo Heights, 6720 Broadway, on Wednesday, November 15th at 10:30am with a light reception following at the church. There will also be a memorial service at the Army Residence Community (7400 Crestway Drive, San Antonio, TX 78239) on Monday, November 20th at 1:30pm.

The family would like to extend their gratitude and thanks to the staff at the Army Residence Community Health Care Center for their loving and compassionate care.

Donations can be made to the Center for the Intrepid (3851 Roger Brooke Drive, SAT 78234) or the Animal Defense League of Texas (11300 Nacogdoches Road, SAT 78217).
