Helen Ewing Obituary

Ewing, Helen Morrill San Antonio, Texas Formerly of Grand Rapids, Michigan and Grosse Pointe, Michigan Helen M. Ewing died on September 2, 2003 at Brighton Gardens, where she spent the last three years of her life. Helen will be remembered for her devotion to her family, and she will be missed by many friends. Born on February 15, 1906 to Herbert N. and Grace Clark Morrill, Helen was a native of Grand Rapids, Michigan. She had one sister the late Elizabeth Whinery. Helen was educated at Sullins College in Bristol, Virginia and at the University of Michigan, where she began a 75-year membership in Alpha Phi. She pursued a career in department store advertising in Grand Rapids before her marriage to Charles H. Attwood and the birth of their 3 daughters. Charles (Bud) died in 1955 at the age of 48. He had been President and General Manager of the Attwood Brass Works, now the Attwood Corporation, a subsidiary of Steelcase, Inc. Helen's ensuing years were filled with her world travels, and enjoying needlepoint and decoupage. The years 1962-1983 were spent in Grosse Pointe, Michigan after Helen married Paul S. Giffin and, then, after his death, Dr. C. Herbert Ewing. She returned to Grand Rapids following Dr. Ewing's death. Helen was active in the community. She was listed in "Who's Who of American Women" in 1966-67. In Grand Rapids she served on the Board of Directors for the Attwood Corporation, the Child Guidance Clinic, the Women's City Club, Babies Welfare Guild, and Susan Lowe Guild of Butterworth Hospital. She was an early member of the Mayflower Congregational Church. She was a member of the Sophie de Marsac Campau Chapter of the D.A.R. and the Kent Country Club. During her years in Grosse Pointe she served on the Board of Directors for the Grosse Pointe Shores Garden Center and also for the Colony Town Club and Cancer Loan Closet Foundation of Greater Detroit. She was a member of the Economic Club of Detroit and a 20-year member of the English Speaking Union of Detroit and the Country Club of Detroit. Helen is survived by her three daughters: Elizabeth (Betty) and Bob Collins of San Antonio, Texas; Rev. Jean and Gene Miller of Kalamazoo, Michigan; and Susan and Clint Boughan of Palos Park, Illinois. Her 5 grand-daughters and their families-including 6 great-grandchildren are Susan and James Baldwin, Sarah and Marie of Dallas, Texas; Martha and Gordon Smith, Helen and Graham of San Antonio, Texas; Pamela Kay and son Dillion of Playa del Rey, California; Karen and David Smith and Ella of St. Charles, Illinois; Glenda Boughan of Elk Grove, Illinois; and her grandson Scot Attwood Norris of Grand Rapids, Michigan. Helen is also survived by a great-niece, Shawn Jones and husband Christopher of Lowell, Michigan. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date in Grand Rapids, Michigan following Interment at Graceland Cemetery. Arrangements by Metcalf-Jonkhoff. San Antonio arrangements by Porter Loring. Helen and her family were very grateful for the kindness extended to Helen by the entire Brighton Gardens staff, Bluebonnet Hospice of Texas, and the SeniorBridge Family Caregivers.
