Herbert Mueller Obituary
Herb Mueller passed away September 4, 2017 in San Antonio at the age of 72. Herb was born March 30, 1945 and grew up on his family's farm in Cibolo with German being his first language. He graduated from Highlands HS in San Antonio in 1963. After school, he became a TV cameraman before enlisting in the Air Force. He ultimately achieved the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the National Guard. Herb went to Southwest Texas University while working a variety of jobs including at a butcher shop and textile mill. After graduating, he worked as a planner for San Antonio before joining SAWS, where he retired in 2011. Herb was very active with his church and led their Habitat for Humanity program. An avid gardener, he was co-director of the Children's Garden and served on the board of the Botanical Center. He also enjoyed working on his farm, blacksmithing, birding, target shooting, fishing, history, and family time. Herb is survived by children Nicole and Derek Mueller and preceded in death by his parents Otto and Viola Mueller and wife Karen Mueller. A memorial service will be held at 1 pm, September 12 at Christ Lutheran Church Alamo Heights, 6720 Broadway. Dear Herb - How could you and did you leave us so soon. Seriously, Buddy, we're all back here missing you already. I talked to Sgt Maldonado and he and I agree that without you we are basically incomplete. We want you to know that you are one of two best decisions I made as a Squadron Commander. With you as my Executive Officer, I could do no wrong. Regretfully, I really messed up by not picking you as my successor. Please forgive my mistake. Your friend always.

My condolences to his family and all the people he graced. I will miss the genteel and honorable man. A man that was glad to share his wisdom and stories. He would always surprise you about the depth of his knowledge. A good man with a sly sense of humor. He will be missed and I am sure he will be blessed.

While working at Infrastructure Planning at SAWS, you humored us with so many stories and enlightened us with a wealth of history knowledge, you will be missed.

I worked with Herb almost up until his retirement from SAWS. He loved talking about history and especially aviation. He also loved collecting arrowheads, and ant traps, which look like little salsa bowls.
He had a wonderful sense of humor that sometimes caught me by surprise. I will always treasure my friendship with him.
