Howard Hassell Obituary

March 13, 1943 - July 28, 2015
Howard Jay Hassell, M.D., passed away unexpectedly early on Tuesday, July 28, 2015 at 72 years old.

Jay Hassell was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, on March 13, 1943, to Howard Johannes Hassell and Mryth Allen Hassell, the third of four children.

From an early age, Jay was focused, inventive, and very determined. At five, he took orange crates and built and painted a nightstand with a drawer for his sister. At nine, he took up cello and became quite good on it. At 13, Jay masterminded a three-story treehouse fort that even included a skylight he could open to see the stars.

Jay liked to come home from junior high for lunch to practice basketball to make the team. It was about this time that he fell from his treehouse and broke both arms in three places. This provoked him to think seriously about the human body, medicine, and orthopedics for the first time.

It was in high school that everything seemed to come together for Jay. He was senior class president and excelled not only academically but in football, basketball, and track.

Those around Jay recognized his impressive traits of character. His 1961 descriptive East High School yearbook entry says this: "A worker who doesn't believe in words such as 'can't' or 'impossible.' His spirit of drive coupled with sincerity and leadership has presented the seniors with an incomparable year." This same spirit motivated him throughout his life. Jay graduated in June 1961.

Turning 19 in March 1962, Jay was eligible to serve as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He accepted the call and spent two-and-a-half happy and very busy years in France as a missionary. His service included acting as an assistant to the mission president, the most responsible position to which a missionary can be called.

After his mission, Jay enrolled in the University of Utah's pre-medical program, graduating cum laude in 1969 with a B.A. He was accepted into Bowman Gray School of Medicine at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, to begin medical school in August 1970.

But by no means was that all that happened that August. Acceptance to Bowman Gray had come unexpectedly and very late, which thoroughly disrupted wedding plans. Jay had met and was engaged to Brenda Whitney. They had to move their wedding date up to Friday, August 28, after which they headed from Salt Lake City to Winston-Salem to begin medical school on Monday, August 31. Needless to say, the honeymoon was condensed.

Jay graduated in 1974 with the doctor of medicine degree, moving immediately into a year of rotating internship in Hartford, Connecticut, and then four years of residency in general orthopedics. During those four years, Jay served on the stake high council of the local L.D.S. church. Despite his almost impossibly heavy and frantic schedule as a medical resident, he missed only three high council meetings in the entire four years.

Following residency, Jay spent 1979 first as a fellow in sports injury surgery in Toronto, Canada, and then as an international fellow in the study of internal fixation in Bern, Switzerland. He soon was licensed to practice medicine in North Carolina, Idaho, Connecticut, Wyoming, andof coursein Texas.

Jay was like so many who have settled in Texas. He might not have been born a Texan, but he got here as fast as he could. He set up practice in San Antonio in August 1980 and practiced as an orthopedic surgeon there for his remaining 35 years. His emphases were arthroscopic surgery, sports injuries, joint replacement, spine surgery, and other general orthopedic and traumatic surgical techniques, including external and internal fixation. As a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine, a Fellow of the American Academy of Disability Evaluating Physicians, and Board Certified by the American College of Forensic Examiners, Jay was superbly qualified technically in his chosen field.

We have seen something of how Jay served in his church with energy and distinction. This continued with even greater consequence in San Antonio, where he labored with great humility and effectiveness in a succession of calls to service: Bishop of the San Antonio 8th Ward (congregation), 1982-1987; President of the Switzerland Geneva Mission, 1987-1990; Bishop of the San Antonio Young Singles Ward, 1991-1996; Counselor in the San Antonio North Stake Presidency, 1996-1999; President of the San Antonio Texas North Stake, 1999-2009; and Patriarch in the San Antonio Texas North Stake, 2009-2015.

Jay is survived by Brenda Whitney Hassell, his wife; daughter Lana Hassell Mann (Justin); daughter Hilary Jeanne Hassell; son Hans Jacob Hassell; granddaughter Laura Mann; sister Cora-Beth Hassell Harmer; sister Marion Hassell Pack (Russell); brother Lewis Allen Hassell (Mary-Bliss); and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, August 1, at the San Antonio Texas North Stake Center of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 645 Knights Cross, San Antonio, Texas 78258. Interment at Mission Burial Park North, 20900 I-10 West, will follow these services.

The family has asked that donations in lieu of flowers be made to the General Missionary Fund of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This can be done online at https://www.ldsphilanthropies.org/
missionary.html or by using a donation envelope available by request at the funeral.

Jay Hassell was a man of rare character and substance. He frequently said, "Fill the full measure of your creation," a standard he encouraged, a standard he lived.

I still offer my condolences for a man who became more than just my doctor. He became my friend and the loss of him still affects me deeply. But rejoice because we are assured that he is sitting with Jesus Christ the Great Physician completely healed! We love you Dr. Hassell!

Alma Barrera

August 21, 2015

My condolences to the Hassell family. My name is Alma Barrera, Dr. Hassell, my guardian angel gave me back my life starting in 2008. It started with my hip replacement, then 2 knee replacements and shoulder surgery, god put him on my path and I will forever be so grateful that he came into my life and gave me back to my family. Until I started reading the other so wonderful messages on his guest book, I could of sworn that I was his favorite patient, that's because he made me feel like that, Ms. Hassell, thank you for sharing him with so many of us, I will so truly miss him but I know he will always be with me in spirit.

August 17, 2015

Dear Hassell Family- How saddened I was to learn of Jay's sudden and unexpected passing. I was a childhood and high school friend and always appreciated the way he treated his school acquaintances and friends. His demeanor was such that you were always filled with respect for him and knew that he had a focus for the life he wanted to live after high school. May our Heavenly Father's blessings be with each one of you. Kendra Dedekind Divine

Dear Brenda,

I was sadly unable to attend the services for President Hassell, but I was grateful to see you and Jay somewhat recently at our last Mission Reunion. I received news of Jay's passing as we were boarding an airplane moving home from France. It was very surreal and a very sad flight home to say the least. I hope you know how grateful I am for your friendship and for our time together in Geneva, Switzerland. That mission has had a tremendous effect upon my life and continues to be a part of my life as I have kept in touch with many people whose lives have been blessed by the gospel. You have been in my prayers and thoughts. I will talk to you soon.

Love,
Aaron

Brenda, I've had you on my mind a lot since hearing about Jay's passing. So sorry to hear of your loss. I didn't have the privilege of knowing him on a personal level, but with what I've read on-line and the obit, there's know doubt he was a remarkable and very accomplished man. You have been blessed to have had him for your husband and father to your children. May the spirit buoy you up and bless you with peace in the coming months.
I hope someday we can meet up again.

P.S. I married two years ago, so I'm now Julie Krey Moon.

I love You❤

My husband and I are so sorry to hear of Dr. Hassell sudden death. Our prayers go out to him and his family. I Juanita Lunderville will miss him. I've been seeing Dr. Hassell for 13 years, 6 back surgeries and 3 knee surgeries. He always made us feel like family. God Bless and take care of him and the family.

August 12, 2015

Dear Brenda and Family,
I served as the Senior Class Secretary alongside Jay in High School. I knew first hand of his energy and sky high dreams. Reading his beautifully written obituary I can see he achieved those dreams but only with your support and love. I have profound compassion for you as you transition to a life without him, having lost my companion last year. I feel my husband still hovers a bit and expect Jay will do the same for you. Thank you for making Jay so happy throughout his pressured and marvelously productive mortal journey.
Love,

I've known President Hassell, for a long time, I followed him on career day (saw him operate -- it was pretty cool), tried to get him to give me his really nice car (didn't work) :) he helped me with my knee problems, and he even set me apart as a missionary. He was hilarious, kind and helpful. It was so sudden, and I still don't think it's fully set in yet. He'll be missed!

August 4, 2015

Dear Hassell Family,

We send our love at this tender time of Jay's passing.

As a neighbor and growing up with Jay and his family in SLC Utah I have witnessed his wonderful leadership ability. Lovingly, his father and mother and family opened their home to his boyhood friends.

I particularly recall the tenacity that the Hassell family employed while on their own, with rented conveyor belt and many helping hands, completely excavated the basement of their home to make room for family and friends.

Diane and I were part of the East High years and observed his energetic ways. His contributions to the "Leopard Spirit" will always be remembered.

His testimony and service has influenced and touched many throughout his wonderful life.

May the peace of the gospel rest upon each of you.

With Love,

Rex Ward

In just a few short months this amazing man left his mark on my life! I have nothing but cherished memories of him, his amazing wife, and his children. Heaven has called one of its greatest warriors home!

August 3, 2015

I was deeply saddened to receive the news, today, of Dr. Hassell's passing. I was a patient of his for the last 11 years.

He was more than my doctor. He became family to my wife and I. Just before each surgery he would wink and smile and ask my wife what kind of picture she wanted him to draw on the specific area I was having surgery on. He always had a positive attitude and such amazing love for each of his patients. It always amazed me at how he could remember conversations we had on previous appointments and could so easily pick up right where we left off.

He was a great man of God and just simply an amazing doctor. I will miss him terribly. I feel so lost for words to adequately express my gratitude for him and my sincere admiration for him.

Heavenly Father, I ask in the name of Jesus that you would take special care of his wonderful wife, children, grandchildren, and the rest of his family and many many friends, and exceptional office staff. Receive him now into Your glorious presence and unto his heavenly reward. In Jesus name I pray...Amen and amen! We love you Dr. Hassell ! Until we meet again...see you on the other side!

Brenda and family,
I had the pleasure of knowing your family since a small child in Connecticut. My mom, Eleanor Gordon Hall, loves you all very much. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Brother Hassell was a great man....and one that I will not forget.

August 2, 2015

I am a former employee of Dr. Hassell and was blessed to have learned so much from him. He also performed surgery on my father and took very good care of him. For this I will always be grateful. My condolences to Brenda and his family during this difficult time. All of you are in my thoughts and prayers. - Cynthia Flores

My heart goes out to you Sister Hassell and your children. I have so many amazing memories of you and Pres. Hassell. I can't sing "High On a Mountain Top" without thinking of how Pres. Hassell sang "Tout au Sommet des Monts" with his strong voice! Both of you pushed me to do more, to memorize more scriptures, to read Jesus the Christ in French, to set higher goals! I remember an early morning run where he let me set the pace, him and a pack of missionaries! I remember riding in the car with him as he was driving and looking up scriptures at the same time!;) I still get excited just hearing about missionaries having a zone conference, we always learned so much! You inspired me too - as I was in the mission home watching you juggle breakfast and getting your kids ready for school and reading a small part of the Book of Mormon in the middle of it all. I followed your example and that memory helped me to follow through with that every hectic morning! I love you both and am so sorry for your loss. [email protected]

I am so sorry to hear about the passing of Dr. Hassell. I was a patient of his for several years. He gave me my life back. He did that not only with his talent as a surgeon, but with compassion, smiles and laughs. It was an honor to have met him. I hope that the love of family and friends will comfort and strengthen you in the days ahead.

My Condolences, to the Family. I was very saddened, and shocked to have learned of his passing, I had just joked with him on the previous Thursday, when he gave me an injection on my back. I feel for his staff that have been working with him for many many years, they are all wonderful people and Dr. Hassell was a very soft spoken person. He was an awesome Dr. that cared for his patients, May he rest in peace and enjoy the eternal life.

August 1, 2015

My deepest condolences to your family. I had the honor and privilege of working with Dr. Hassell in Surgery at Methodist Specialty and Transplant. He was always there with a friendly word, a cheerful good morning wish and a smile on his face. He would joke about different occurrences in the O. R. and always, always put his patients first and foremost which was so evident to me as I had many opportunities to hear him offer words of wisdom, guidance and comfort to so many of his patients just before they would go into surgery. He was a blessing to so many. The staff, the patients, his colleagues and our department will feel the void of his passing. He will be missed.

Dear Brenda,

You are surely in my thoughts today and I express my love and sympathy to you and your beloved children. It was my privilege to visit with Jay following Jane's funeral --- a spirit of goodness, of honest kindness, of sincere interest in others radiated from him. He is one of the best of God's sons who searched for and found one of the most choice of God's daughters.

At seventy-two years, Jay's death seems premature but we know the Lord views the plan from the perspective of eternity and will use His children to further that plan whether here or behind the veil. Jay may now be busier than his mortality allowed on this earth.

Ward and I express our love to you. We know you and Jay are a team and have strived to serve and lift one another. The Lord knows you; He knows of the ache in your heart and He will ever be close to comfort and fill you.

I will be in touch. My love, Lynette

A Missionary's Tribute

President Hassell was a mission president extraordinaire! As a leader he was known for frequently traveling La Belle Mission hosting zone conferences in beautiful historic places where powerful trainings were given driving the principles home from both a historic and gospel perspective while setting goals.

He was an innovative leader who was never afraid to try anything new to achieve the goal. The Switzerland, Geneva Mission under President Hassell's leadership was known for a spirit of faith, determination and enthusiasm that permeated the entire mission as was the adopted creed to take the standard of truth forward penetrating every clime. There were many "trucs" to show for it including mission sweatshirts, watches, music cassettes, pens and missionary hosted events and activities such as musical firesides, slideshows, music videos, english lessons, and sporting activities.

President Hassell did anything he could do to facilitate the missionaries reaching and teaching the people. He especially took on President Benson's challenge to flood the earth with the Book of Mormon. The missionaries went from distributing 100 Books of Mormon a month to 5000 a month, at times working 100 hour work weeks and the baptisms correlated accordingly. Faith, hard work and sacrifice were the key to many mission miracles as missionaries wore holes in their shoes and grew callouses on their knees.

On a personal level, President was more than a president. He was a mentor, a father and a friend. He was known and loved for his characteristic humor, laugh, Texan style french accent, and singing with gusto. Most of all his personal attention and caring to each missionary in the mission extended way beyond mission years and is what captured the hearts and changed the lives of his missionaries and those he served in France and Switzerland. He certainly paid forward the great care Elder Vaughn J. Featherstone extended to him in his early years. His example and love brought out the best in a person.

We are better for having been led and blessed by President H. Jay Hassell. His testimony of Jesus Christ, the gospel and the restored church of Christ was evident in all he did. It is our desire to love as he loved and to serve as he served.

We love him and miss him already. Our love and most sincere condolences to Brenda and the family.

He was considerate, compassion, and a friend. We enjoyed listening to his jokes. Never too busy to discuss Jesus with David and me. My husband and I have been a patient of Dr. Hassell for over 9 years. He'd been more a friend than a physician. The medical field has lost a brilliant surgeon and we have lost a great friend. Our condolences to the family. We will miss his witty and funny jokes and miss hearing about his travels. He spoke so highly of his family.
