J CARLOS JONES
August 5, 1930 - November 25, 2025
On November 25, 2025, the Lord called home J Carlos Jones after a brief hospital stay. Born August 5, 1930, in Amarillo, Texas, to Carlos B. and Viola Loraine Hanson Jones, Carlos grew up in Amarillo and graduated from Amarillo High School in 1948. His lifelong career in architecture began there, working after school for Architect W R Kaufman. He earned an Associate of Science from Amarillo College, then graduated from the College of Architecture at Texas Technological College in 1954.
Carlos met Sybil in Lake City, Colorado, in 1946, and they married on June 3, 1952. He served in the U.S. Army from 1954–1956 at Fort Bliss in Texas and Eielson Air Force Base in Alaska as a radar mechanic on the M33 Antiaircraft Fire Control System and a 120 mm antiaircraft gun battery. While in Alaska, their son Arthur was born, followed by daughter Kara after the family returned to Texas.
Carlos worked for firms in Lubbock and El Paso before joining Bartlett Cocke & Associates in San Antonio in 1962. After Mr. Cocke's retirement, Carlos and partner John H. Kell, Jr. formed Jones & Kell, Architects & Planners, focusing on commercial, educational, and office facilities. He was an Emeritus member of the American Institute of Architects, San Antonio Chapter, and the Texas Society of Architects. Carlos was also awarded the 1991 Distinguished Alumni Award in Architecture at Texas Tech University.
After his long and successful career, Carlos retired at the end of 1995, giving him much more time to spend with his family and friends, while enjoying golfing, hunting and fishing.
A dedicated Kiwanian for 47 years, he served Boysville as both board member and trustee and led construction of volunteer-built wheelchair ramps across Bexar and surrounding counties. Carlos and Sybil worshiped at University Presbyterian Church in San Antonio and later at First United Methodist Church of Boerne.
Carlos is survived by his beloved wife, Sybil, his wife of 73 years, son, Arthur (Donna), by daughter Kara (Mark), and by six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, and extended family. Our husband, father and grandfather is dearly loved and will be greatly missed for his unwavering love and support of all of us.
Carlos' memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM on Friday, December 12, 2025 at Porter Loring Mortuary. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Boysville at
