Jacqueline Desobry Obituary

DESOBRY
Jacqueline Keyes Desobry, of San Antonio, TX died September 10, 2011 at the age of 90. Jackie Desobry was born at West Point, NY; she was the daughter of Leila Harrison Keyes and Lt. General Geoffrey Keyes (USA, Ret) and the widow of Lt. General William R. Desobry (USA Ret). She grew up on various Army Posts in this country, including Ft. Ringgold, TX and Ft. Riley, Kansas, Europe and Panama. She attended a convent in Cannes, France as a young girl, becoming fluent in French. She also attended Georgetown Visitation Preparatory School in Washington, DC and graduated from Noroton Convent of the Sacred Heart in Darien, CT. Throughout her life Jackie performed the duties of a traditional Army Officer's daughter and wife, moving her growing family to and from the US and Europe many times. She held the family together during World War II and Vietnam while her husband served his country, including his confinement as POW in WWII. In 1997, the city of Bastogne, Belgium named a street after her late husband, LTG Desobry, in honor of his heroism at the Battle of the Bulge. Jackie wrote and then delivered a speech in French at the dedication ceremony in Belgium. Despite having survived a bout with polio in the mid 1950's and wearing a back brace for many years, Jackie was an avid golfer and played regularly wherever her family was stationed, up until the last few years in San Antonio. She could proudly boast of two-holes-in one! She held many positions in the San Antonio Women's Golf Association. She was devoted to the Catholic Church and lovingly performed her duties as a lay reader at St. Pius X Catholic Church in San Antonio where she was a member of the Bereavement Committee and the Mother Teresa of Calcutta Ladies Guild. She was also a member of the Sacred Heart Alumnae Association. Her husband of 54 years, Lt. General William R. Desobry, (USA, Ret) preceded her in death in 1996. She is survived by 6 children, Dorsey Chescavage of Springfield, VA; Virginia Sivigny of Burke, VA; Nancy Desobry of Sugarland, TX; Geoffrey Desobry of Bethesda, MD; Leslie Dickey of Houston, TX and Bill Desobry of Arlington, TX and 10 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren as well as her brother Geoffrey Keyes of Pittsburgh. She was much loved by all and will be greatly missed. Visitation will be on Thursday, September 15, 2011 from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Porter Loring.

As an elementary student I knew Jackie in Heidelberg, Germany and Vienna, Austria 1946-1948/49 when my Dad, Charles G Dodge, worked for her Dad, Gen Geoffrey Keyes. She was always so nice to me a a little girl. I am sorry I didn´t see her after that.

To all the family:
We were so blessed to have had Jackie at St. Pius X! The early morning daily mass goers were such a close group for so many years and she was always there to encourage. As she lives with God in heaven she will continue to guide you all! She will truly be missed because of all her love. God Bless You all!
