Janet Wiegert Riley
June 5, 1935 - October 11, 2023
Janet Wiegert Riley passed away peacefully on October 11, 2023, after a long struggle with Alzheimer's disease. She was surrounded by family and friends in her last days.
Jan was born on June 5, 1935, to Lillian and Elmer Wiegert, in Dearborn, Michigan. Jan was the baby sister to Dorothy and Henry "Bud", both much older at 15 and 11 years respectively. Her birth family was close and adored each other.
Janet attended the College of Wooster in Wooster, OH. She often spoke fondly of her time there. She then pursued a Registered Nurse (RN) degree at Case Western Reserve. There, she met Fred Riley, a resident in radiology. Janet was a scrub nurse for surgeries. Fred and Janet married in 1960. They set up their home in San Antonio, Texas, near Fred's parents and brother. Their first child, Alan, was born in 1961. Their second child, Karin, was born in 1973. After Alan and Karin's births, Janet retired from nursing and transferred her caring and healing skills to her children and their groups of friends, taking care of all friends as if they were her children.
Jan helped found the Church of Reconciliation in the early 1970s. Jan and Fred spent countless hours keeping the grounds beautiful. Janet also enjoyed ordering the flowers for services and bringing them to church community members in the hospital or nursing homes to brighten their days.
Jan was present at every band concert her children played in and was president of the Northwood Elementary PTA.
Jan and Fred also belonged to the Lake Canyon Yacht Club on Canyon Lake, where they had a lake house. The family spent weekends and summer days sailing and swimming. Jan prepared an elegant feast for every meal. She participated tirelessly in club clean-ups and potlucks, delighting in hosting club members at their house for dinner.
Jan was preceded in death by her parents Lillian and Elmer, her brother Bud and sister Dorothy, her husband Fred, her son Alan, and her grandson Worth. Jan is survived by her daughter Karin and her granddaughters Meryn and Alexandria (Lexi) as well as her great-grandson, Mycroft.
A celebration of life will be held at the Church of Reconciliation, 8900 Starcrest Dr., San Antonio, Texas, on Saturday, November 11 at 11 a.m. The service will be followed by a catered lunch. Donations may be offered to the church in her memory. Please visit
