Jerome Carl Highsmith of San Antonio, TX passed away at home on Thursday, December 24, 2015. Jerome was born December 16, 1947 in Cleveland, OH. After serving in the in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, Jerome earned a Bachelor of Arts in Biology from the University of Missouri. Jerome went on to earn a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Florida, and completed medical training at The University of Texas Health Science Center. Dr. Highsmith was a Fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. In the later years of his medical career, Dr. Highsmith generously volunteered his time providing medical care to underserved populations in Honduras. He retired in 2013, after 30 years in private practice. In addition to his love for practicing medicine, Dr. Highsmith was an avid golfer and art collector. He enjoyed listening to music and played several instruments. Dr. Highsmith was also a fervent supporter of the University of Florida Gators. Dr. Highsmith is survived by his wife, Adrian (Ivey) Highsmith; sons, Zachary (Stephanie) Highsmith and Damon (Diana Muñoz) Highsmith; granddaughter, Harper Highsmith; father, Hubbard Highsmith; brothers, Melvin, Cornell, Lamar and Robert Highsmith; sister, Loretta Gordon; loving in-laws, nieces, nephews and cousins. He is preceded in death by his mother Uria Highsmith, brother Marvin Highsmith, and sister Barbara Ann Torrence. Dr. Highsmith was loved by many and will be missed deeply. At Jerome's request, no memorial services will be held. In lieu of flowers, a donation in Jerome's memory can be made to the Willie J. Dr highsmith you delivered my son 19 yrs ago, named Mark. You were so kind and caring. You made me laugh when clearly you saw I was pretty nervous since I hadn't been pregnant in almost 10 yrs. Dr. Highsmith assisted Dr. Deavor in delivering my daughter in 1981 when I was only 15 years old. He remained my doctor until he retired in 2013. I can honestly say that there was no other doctor like him. He showed great care & compassion and did more than the minimal to ensure that I stayed healthy especially since I did not routinely see another doctor for my general health. I have missed him dearly & was thinking about him so I decided to search the web & found out about his passing. My condolences to his family & I will keep them in my prayers. My deepest condolences to the whole family. I first meet Dr. Highsmith almost 32 years ago. After my first daughter was born. He gave me medical care for my other two daughters. He delivered my both pregnancies. He brought them into this world making sure they were healthy. He was a wonderful caring doctor. He also saved my life my finding the cancer I had.
