Joe Mayfield Obituary
Joe Mayfield was born January 9, 1941 in San Antonio, TX. He was raised from an early age by his stepfather Benito Delgado who he loved and respected deeply. Joe credited his stepfather with teaching him strong values such as honesty and hard work. At age 17, he joined the U.S. Army and proudly served during the Vietnam War. Upon returning to San Antonio, Joe began working with the U.S. Postal Service where he retired after 22 years of service. In 1965, Joe established Mayfield Tax Service on a part-time basis. He developed this part-time venture into one of the largest independently owned tax services in the area. Because of his interest and study in law enforcement personnel deductions, he was recognized as one of the most knowledgeable persons in this field. He was proud to number among his clients hundreds of law enforcement officers from many areas including SAPD, Bexar County Sheriff's Office, U.S. Border Patrol, TABC, Converse, Schertz, Windcrest, Olmos Park, and Seguin police departments, and many others. In 1981, Joe became a Real Estate Broker and established Carmay Realty which he successfully managed until his final days. In 1984, Joe invested in a Westside property and moved his tax office and home to this location. Right next door, he opened J&A lounge, a friendly neighborhood watering hole for his many friends and family. For many years, Joe served as a Reserve Deputy for the Bexar County Sheriff's Department and the Bexar County Constable precinct 2. Furthermore, Joe was an endowed member of Prospect Hill Lodge #1247 Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, and had the distinction of being a Past Master of Valley Hi Lodge #1407 AF & DM serving from 1978-1979. He was also a member of VFW Post 579. Joe loved to meet new people and enjoyed conversation. He treasured those precious moments spent with his friends, family and customers. Joe was especially close to Vernon T. Bonillas, who he considered his best friend and loved like a brother. He was also close to his son-in-law Daryn Windell for whom he had great respect and love for. He was proud to number among his friends Judge Al Alonzo, Dr. Henrique Levcovitz, Dr. Carmen Garza, Sergeant Mike Oliva, Officer Mike Castano, Deputy Chief Rudy Gonzales, and numerous others. Joe established a close relationship with Isabel Sierra, Jesse (Wero) Perez, and Eva Perez who he loved as his stepchildren. He is survived by his loving companion Janie C. Perez, daughters Sylvia Stein, Irene Mayfield, and Christina Mayfield, sons Michael A. Mayfield and Paul S. Mayfield, Grandchildren Matthew D. Mayfield, Brooke A. Mayfield, Xavier Mayfield, Ashlyn Mayfield and John Anthony Perez. Visitation will begin Wednesday, August 16, 2006 at 1:00 PM with a Rosary being recited at 7:30 PM. A Chapel Service will be held Thursday, August 17, 2006, contact the funeral home for the time. Interment will follow at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
