John Schell Obituary

SMSgt. John A. Schell, USAF (Ret.), a resident of San Antonio, Texas since 1976 passed away on May 20, 2008. He retired in 1977 after 27 years of honorable service. John was a faithful and active member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. He also retired from the Express-News (his second career) after 20 years of employment. He had a zest for life and lifelong desire for learning which he shared with all and passed on to his family. He loved to converse and give advice. He was an expert on military history. John was a contributing writer for the Stars and Stripes in the Far East and North Africa. He was much loved, and will be dearly missed by his many friends and his family. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Victor and Richard. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Maria T. Schell; his children, Frances R. Soper of Jacksonville, Florida, John A. Schell, Jr. of Las Cruces, New Mexico, Kathleen C. Spadachene of Dallas, Texas, Corinne J. Morales of San Antonio, Texas, and LtCol. Rita M. Schell of Patrick Air Force Base, Florida; 11 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild; his sisters, Rita Crock of Zanesville, Ohio, Mary Merry of Canton, Ohio, and Donna Bridgeman of Caldwell, Ohio. The family will receive friends on Thursday from 6:00 to 7:00 P.M. at Porter Loring Mortuary. ROSE OF LIMA CATHOLIC CHURCH 9883 MARBACH RD SAN ANTONIO Father Juan Alfaro will be officiating. Interment Full Military Honors will follow in Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery. Mr. Schell was a very kind and thoughtful man. He was my Grandmother's (Pauline Whelpley) neighbor for a long time. I remember him fondly. Rest in Peace.

I enjoyed working with John for many years on the EN copydesk. He was a lovely, sweet man who could always be counted on to bring a box of fried chicken to our saturday night potluck dinners on the desk. I will always remember how he would answer the phone on the copy desk with his deep, deep voice. He is one of those truly memorable characters I enjoyed working with in the newspaper business.
