JOHN E. "BUD" SMOTHERS JR.
November 6, 1945 - October 22, 2025
John E. "Bud" Smothers Jr. was born in Corpus Christi, Texas, on November 6, 1945. He passed away peacefully at home on October 22, 2025, just short of his 80th birthday.
Bud settled in San Antonio after graduating from Ray High School in Corpus Christi and attended Trinity University, where he earned one of the very few early degrees in computer science, a rare degree at that time. He worked at Texas Industrial Services, designing the first computerized systems for the company, which had operations across five states in the U.S. He loved San Antonio for its colorful community festivals, for the many diverse friendships he developed, and for the expanded family life he built here, and decided to make it his permanent home. Along with his wife Patricia Harding Smothers he supported many local nonprofit organizations through the Smothers Foundation, satisfying a spirit that was both generous and highly intelligent. All who knew him will remember that his cats were very special companions that brought him much joy over the years.
Bud was preceded in death by his parents, John E. Smothers and Doris McCord Smothers. He is survived by his wife of nearly 50 years, Patricia H. Smothers, his sister Mary Ann Smothers Bruni, his daughter, Jackie Bruni, his stepson Michael Hartman and wife Cheryl Jenkines, many dear Smothers, Harding, and Bruni family members, and a network of friends who cherished his loyalty, sense of fun, and unique spirit.
Much appreciated support in his life came from Myrlene Nichols. Much appreciated care came from Jane, Gilbert, Gladis, Diana, Kaycee, Evie, Madison and Aneca.
A celebration of his life will be held in the future.
