Joseph Taylor Obituary

Joseph William Taylor
May 3, 1952 - May 21, 2023
Joseph William "Joe" Taylor died peacefully on Sunday, May 21, 2023, at the age of 71. He was a native Texan having been born in Uvalde, grew up in Crystal City and has been a San Antonio resident for 34 years. He was the son of Epsie Bell Thompson Taylor and Robert Augustus Taylor, Jr. He was married to Catherine Harwood Taylor for over 34 years. He never knew a stranger and was universally generous. Joe had a love of life and communicated that to all that knew him. Not only intelligent, but understanding and capable of seeing others' points of view, he was also fun to be around.
Joe graduated from Crystal City High School and Southwestern University with a B.B.A. and a B.A. He was a proud member of Pi Kappa Alpha and had lifelong "brothers," as a result. He got his J.D. from the University of Houston and practiced law in South Texas until the day he died. He was an expert in oil and gas, and real estate law; his expertise will be missed. He followed his father's footsteps in serving on the Southwest Texas Junior College Board of Directors, as Zavala County Attorney, and as Zavala County Judge.
He was a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church. He was also a member of the Texas Cavaliers including the Texas Cavaliers Mounted Platoon, serving as its Captain. In addition, he was also a member of the Order of the Alamo, the German Club, Sons of the Republic - William B. Travis Chapter, San Antonio Country Club, and The Argyle.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his niece, Baye Marie Taylor Perkins. He is survived by his wife, Catherine; his brother, Dr. Robert Taylor; and sister-in-law Maggie Taylor. Joe is also survived by nieces, Tegan Bell Taylor, Marissa Taylor and her husband, Zach Schofield; nephew, Sam Taylor and his wife, Amanda. He is further survived by a great-nephew Cash Taylor; great nieces, Rowan Taylor, Finley Taylor, Rose Schofield, and Maren Schofield; sisters-in-law, Gail Harwood and Anne Harwood, as well as many cousins and close friends. Joe also shared a special relationship with his father-in-law Roane Harwood.

I´m sorry to learn of Joe´s passing. I worked with Catherine for over 20 years. During that time I encountered Joe a handful of times and always found him to be a kind and highly intelligent man.

I remember Joe as an upperclassman when I went to Southwestern as a freshman in 1972. He had that welcoming spirit & was certainly a leader within the student body.
My condolences to his family.
