SFC (Ret) Luis Charles Jr., 84, of San Antonio, TX, beloved husband, brother, father, grandfather and great grandfather passed away at home on February 22, 2022. He was born September 6, 1937, in Del Rio, TX, to the late Luis and Tomasa Charles.
Luis enlisted in the Army at 17 years old. At 19, he married his beloved wife, Julia. Together they raised six children, Luis III, Araceli (Raul) Ramirez, Corina (Johnnie) Coleman, Cynthia Medellin, Katherine Charles and Julia J. Charles.
Over the course of his military career, he completed Airborne School and completed the Special Forces Qualification Course. Luis served three tours in Vietnam and received (5) Good Conduct Medals, Silver Star, Bronze Star Medal with "V" device, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross w/Palm Unit Citation, Meritorious Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, NATO Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Presidential Unit Citation. After serving his country for 20 years, he retired on February 29, 1976.
Luis went on to obtain his MSW at Our Lady of the Lake University and worked several years at the Vet Center (a division of the Veteran Affairs Office) as a counselor. He was also a proud "Founding Father" and lifetime member of the Alamo Silver Wings Association.
Luis was preceded in death by his parents, his son, his grandchildren Luis IV, Jasmine Coleman, and Angelica Faith Pollock as well as the love of his life, Julia.
He is survived by his sister, Nelia Charles, his daughters, numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Visitation will take place Sunday, March 6, 2022 from 2:00pm until 8:00pm with a Rosary to be recited at 6:00pm. Visitation will continue Monday, March 7, 2022 at Castle Ridge Mortuary.
A funeral mass will be taking place at 12:00pm at St. Vincent de Paul catholic church, 4222 SW. Loop 410, San Antonio, Texas 78227. Interment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery at Cordi-Marian.
