Mary Garza Obituary

Mary Elizabeth "Liz" Leyendecker Garza
September 12, 1929 - October 24, 2025
Beloved mother, Mary Elizabeth "Liz" Leyendecker Garza, went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on October 24, 2025.
Born on September 12, 1929, in Laredo, Texas, Liz entered the world under extraordinary circumstances. Weighing just three pounds at birth and small enough to fit in her father's hand, she defied the odds from her very first breath. From the beginning, she exhibited a resilience that would define her life as a proud fifth-generation Texan descended from José Luciano Navarro of San Antonio, Texas. Her resilience and vibrant spirit would go on to define a life filled with love, faith, and unwavering devotion to family, community and God.
Liz was the cherished daughter of Mercedes Cantu Leyendecker and Henry George Leyendecker. She often reflected on her family history-how both her mother and she were each an only child-and found joy in the contrast of her own legacy: a proud mother of eight children. Her life was centered around her family, whom she loved deeply and nurtured with strength and tenderness, and her many cherished lifelong friends.
She is lovingly remembered by her children and their spouses: Philip and Nancy Garza, James Garza and Bruce Iverson, Geri and Tom Thelen, Roni and Duane Pozza, Henry and Amy Garza, Elisa and Russ Blackwell, Marty and Susie Garza, and Ginny. Liz's legacy continues through her 22 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren-with one more expected in December.
A woman of deep Catholic faith, Liz dedicated two decades of service as a Homebound Minister with St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church. Her ministry was marked by compassion and reverence as she brought the Holy Eucharist to the sick and elderly, a role she considered one of the greatest honors of her life. Her gentle presence brought comfort to many during their most vulnerable moments.
Liz was predeceased by her parents and by her beloved granddaughter, Kristen Pozza.
A Rosary Service will be held on Thursday, November 20, 2025, at 6:30 p.m. at Porter Loring Mortuary North. A Funeral Mass will follow on Friday, November 21, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church, 102 Lorenz Rd., San Antonio, TX 78209. A private burial will take place at San Fernando Cemetery II.
Mary Elizabeth "Liz" Garza leaves behind a profound legacy of faith, perseverance, and love that will continue to inspire all who knew her. May her memory bring comfort to those she touched throughout her remarkable life.

Liz and I worked together, participated in the Allied Florist addiction together. Over 40 years there were countless diners, lunches , presents, flowers and birthday celebrations. If you knew Liz you know how much she loved presents. It has been my honor. Sharon Allen

Your mother was a good friend to my mother for 30 years. They did many things together: laughing, praying, loving, consoling. Please accept my sympathies for your loss.
My Mom has been with God for almost 25 years, but I miss her all the time.
I would attend your Mom's services, but I fractured my arm and can't drive at this time
