Mary Oliver Obituary

Mary Eugenia 'Genie' Wheeler Oliver, 96, known by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren as Mama Genie, passed away on July 11, 2004 in San Antonio, TX. Genie was born September 9, 1907 in Little Rock, AR, the youngest child of Joseph and Maude Hardcastle Wheeler. Genie married Gus O. Oliver on February 25, 1933; his career took them to many cities El Dorado, AR, Shreveport, New Orleans, Little Rock, Texarkana, Houston, Fort Worth, Pittsburgh, PA, New York City and St. Louis. Genie made a wonderful home wherever her husband was transferred. They retired to live in New Braunfels in 1970 and lived there for many years. Gus died in 1990 and Genie moved to San Antonio in 1995. Genie was preceded in death by her parents, brother and sisters and her beloved husband of 57 years. She is survived by her family, daughter and son-in-law, Shirley and Dr. Albert Sanders of San Antonio; son and daughter-in-law, Dick and Janice Oliver of Montgomery, TX; niece, Wanda Sue Corlew of Memphis, TN; grandchildren, Dr. Jim Sanders (Tricia) of Eire, PA, Mary Kay Sanders Gribbons (Gerry) of Kansas City, MO, Rev. Stephen Sanders (Mary) of San Antonio, Chris Oliver (Tina) of Montgomery and Mike Oliver of Austin; great-grandchildren, Luke, Jon, Nate and Joseph Sanders, Donald, Bates, McKie and Bailey Gribbons, Megan and Bailey Oliver and David and James Sanders; great-niece, Susan Bates Corlew of Millington, TN. Visitation will be from 5:00 P.M., Tuesday at the Zoeller Funeral home and continue until 5:00 P.M., Wednesday. The family will be present from 5:00 7:00 P.M. Tuesday to greet friends at the funeral home. Services will be Thursday, July 15, 2004 at 10:00 A.M. at the Coker United Methodist Church, 231 N. Loop Rd., San Antonio, TX 78216, with the Rev. Stephen A. Sanders and Rev. John Gibbs presiding. Interment will follow in the Guadalupe Valley Memorial Park in New Braunfels, TX. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to First United Methodist Church in New Braunfels, 572 W. San Antonio St., New Braunfels, TX 78130, Coker United Methodist Church, 231 E. North Loop Rd., San Antonio, TX 78216 or the charity of one's choice. Zoeller Funeral Home.
