MaryEanes Garven Obituary

GARVEN
MaryEanes Garven passed away and was reunited with her beloved husband on May 4, 2012.The only child of Dewey L. Bowden and Eanes B. Brophy, MaryEanes was born on July 8, 1922 in San Antonio Texas. She graduated from Jefferson High School 1940, where she was the Drum Major for the Lasso Drum & Bugle Corp. In 1939 the Lasso's traveled on a whistle stop tour meeting Eleanor Roosevelt at the White House, visiting Congress, then marching at the New York Worlds Fair. Next they met Henry Ford, toured the factory and museum in Dearborn Michigan where she posed atop the 27th millionth Ford. A movie "High School" in 1940 featured the Lasso's, starred Jane Withers and flashed on MaryEanes marching with her baton! After graduation MaryEanes worked for War Assets. May 29, 1953 she married her lifelong love Robert W. "Bill" Garven. They were very active in the social life in San Antonio and traveled frequently to Mexico, driving from San Antonio to Acapulco in 17 hours. In Acapulco they enjoyed swimming, fishing and mingling with the jet set that frequented this city. In 1966 the family moved to California settling in Ventura where Bill Garven was the manager of Barker Brothers furniture store for 20 years.
After Bill's retirement they traveled the country and enjoyed life. Bill passed in 1998 and MaryEanes struggled with some disabilities but nothing would keep her down. She was active up to six months before she passed spending time with her family, church fellowship and friends. In 2011 she was awarded an Honorary Lifetime Member Award by the Lasso Alumni Association for her achievements with the Lassos. Her photo and baton were part of an exhibit at the Bob Bullock Texas History Museum in Austin and now are on permanent display at Jefferson High School. A devoted wife and mother she was known for her love of her children, family, friends and her big heart. She was a fantastic dancer, accomplished cook, homemaker and an extremely beautiful woman who always lit up any room she entered. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Heather and Bob Sanders of Ojai and her son and daughter-in-law, Robert W. Garven Jr. and Rose Latourell of Ventura and many dear friends. She will be truly missed by all that knew and loved her. There will be a service at the First United Methodist Church of Ventura on July 28 at 11am. Her ashes will be spread at sea near the Anacapa Island arch to be finally at rest with her beloved husband Bill.

I will truly miss Maryeanes, she was like a second Mom to me. I have worked for her for 9 years, helping her as much as possible with household chores and getting to where ever she needed to be. One of my favorite memories of her was watching her eat her favorite ice cream, lemon sorbet. She managed to get me hooked on it as well. The smile on her face when I would bring her the sorbet was absolutely priceless. I miss her but know in my heart she really wanted to be with her husband, Bill. May God keep them both in his graces.

Heather, I was very sorry to hear of the loss of your mother. I remember her as that mother with the "spark". She always seemed special, and now I know why. I hope you and your family find comfort in the happy memories you have of your times together.

I will love you always, dear MaryEanes. Our conversations of life, Bill, your children, friends at church and so much more, will stay with me forever. Thank you for letting me be your other "daughter in law" for years after I was the ex. :) I will deeply cherish your memory as you were my adopted mom and always treated me with the utmost love and caring. We will miss you so much but know you are in a better place with your beloved husband, Bill. XXOO Debbie

Although I was not acquainted directly with MaryEanes, I feel as though it were so. Separated by many years, we both graduated from the same high school in San Antonio and were members of the same girls' organization, the Lassos, which in Mary Eanes' time was nationally famous. It is great to know that she was happy reviving those memories at the end of her life on this Earth and sharing them with her family at home and with us in San Antonio.
Thank you, MaryEanes, for the time you gave "back when" and (maybe more importantly) this past couple of years and the delightful memories that has given us. Thank so much.
Peace to you and your family.

I miss you mother so much, there are so many things I want to say to you. I love you so very much and will remember you every day of my life. You were the best mother in the world. You were not only beautiful on the outside but on the inside as well. Everything I am, I have or will be you made possible. I know that you are with our beloved Dad.

Love Always,

Your son,
Robbie

Rob:
Your mom was so very special, to both Bette and I, I fondly remember the Weds night band concerts in Ojai. She was always so positive. I will miss her very much. And just want you to know how much I appreciate our friendship. I wish you all the best.

Mother in 2011 before sending baton "Oscar" off to the Bob Bullock Museum of Texas History in Austin . My mother was beautiful and wonderful person.
