Matthew Farrar Obituary

Matthew Grubbs Farrar IV, age 70, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family on January 1, 2020 in San Antonio, TX after a short, but hard-fought battle with cancer.

Matt was born in Shreveport, LA on January 7, 1949 to Matthew Grubbs Farrar III and Wanda Araujo Gray. He moved to San Antonio, TX when he was six years old, and called it home the rest of his life. He attended Central Catholic High School and proudly served in the United States Air Force before entering San Antonio College where he earned an associate degree in Radio/Television/Film.

Music played a defining role in his life. Matt was a talented musician who sang and played many instruments. He had a short career in radio and sales before opening his own business, Aardwolf Collects, a retail shop for music and memorabilia. He was an avid and prolific collector. His knowledge of all things music related earned him the nickname "The Record Man". He participated in record shows throughout his career and was recognized and respected both nationally and internationally.

Matt cherished his children above all else. From coaching teams to attending concerts, he was very present in their lives. An avid Longhorn fan, he was delighted when all three of his children chose UT for their education. He particularly adored his grandchildren and always wished for more time with them.

Matt is survived by his devoted wife, Cassandra Gay Farrar, his three children: Matthew Grubbs Farrar V (Jennifer), Lauren Farrar Boland (Jason), and Erin Paige Farrar Kantor (Nicholas); grandchildren: Skyer Grayson Farrar, Taylor Sage Farrar, Brayden Ender Farrar, and Adelaide Gigi Kantor; sister: Sydnea Jacobs; niece: Pauline Weichert; step-sisters: Diane Kaplan and Cindy Kaplan; former spouse: Ellen Susan Farrar.

He was preceded in death by his father: Matthew Grubbs Farrar III, mother: Wanda Araujo Gray, stepfather: Dr. Arthur Martin Gray, and niece: Stephanie Lea Jacobs.

A family graveside service with military honors is planned at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in the spring.

Matt so appreciated all the visits, emails, texts and calls from friends and relatives. The outpouring of love and support is amazing.

To his customers, fellow merchants and music lovers – You meant as much to him as he did to you. Thank you.

The family is grateful for the love and care provided by the doctors, nurses, and other staff of the VA Hospital.

Memorial contributions can be made to Voluntary Service (135), South Texas Veterans Health Care System, 7400 Merton Minter Blvd., San Antonio, TX 78229 (210-617-5107).

I was one of Matt´s customers at Eisenhauer Flea Market. He was a very nice and friendly man who knew a great deal about records and music. Matt was nice and friendly to everyone there and was a dynamite source of positive energy to the Flea Market! I last spoke with him in September 2019, after he briefly returned to run his shop after undergoing his first surgery. I was very sorry to hear that he did not survive his second surgery. Mr. Aardwolf will not be forgotten

Matt was one of the nicest human beings I ever met. He was an honest, hardworking family man. He often talked glowingly about his wonderful wife Cassie and his kids, and he was always helpful and supportive in any situation to which he could lend a hand or offer advice. Of course, he loved music passionately, but most of all he loved to make people happy. He gave so much of himself to make the world a better place.

My condolences to all those who were touched by Matt. I knew Matt only because of my desire to start collecting records and all that is music. I would make the effort to catch him at his Eisenhauer location, never knowing the Windsor Park Mall site. Enjoyed taking up his time to obtain his insights on the industry and of the local music history, as I was certainly new and had a lot to learn. Without doubt, he loved his Family. As a Holy Cross Graduate and a life-long Marianist Parishioner, he and I would talk religion among other topics.

The world has lost one heck of a human being, a wonderful friend and confidant to everyone. Matt will forever be missed. A NOTE TO HIS CHILDREN. As a longtime customer, I recall the big smiles you and his grandchildren brought to Matt's face when he spoke of his family. You were his life. May these words bring you comfort and peace in this time of sorrow.

I've known Matt for about 20 years and him a joy to talk to. He had some very interesting stories to tell and was never boring. I sold him some of my albums and always gave me a fair price. I was always thankful for his honestly. He always had a great sense of humor. The last time I saw him was over a year ago. When I heard about his cancer, I wished I would have visited him more. I am truly going to miss him!

I will miss that smile, that laugh. Matt made my weekends at the flea market bearable. He introduced me to my very best friend. He tried to get me to eat spicy Sea Monkeys! Matt welcomed my family and me into his family wholeheartedly, a family he truly cherished and for that I will remain grateful and forever blessed. To his loved ones, I can only offer words of condolence and a listening ear if ever you would like to talk and tell me more about him. May he rest in peace.

Matt was one of my friends and classmates at Central Catholic HS.
His smile and constant antics kept all of us happy.
He was a great friend and I was so blessed to be able to see him and reconnect at our CCHS reunions.
One of my favorite memories was the summer of 1967 at Port A.
Love you Matt.
