Michael Lee "Mickey" Mitchell

Michael "Mickey" Lee Mitchell, 72 of San Antonio, Texas passed away in the early hours of Thursday, February 22, 2018. He was born on January 8, 1946 to John B. and Wilma Mitchell in Sinton, Texas. Mickey spent his formative years in the community of Taft, Texas and graduated from Taft High School in 1964. He excelled at all sports (especially basketball) and was selected as "Best All Around" his senior year. The friendships that he cultivated during those years in Taft were truly cherished and he continued throughout his life. He was always mindful of those relationships and nurtured them at every opportunity. He went on to earn a BBA-Finance from the University of Texas at Austin. After graduating he began a fifty plus year career in the banking and financial planning business most recently with Wells Fargo. As a result of his time at UT he became a "Lifetime Longhorn" and continued to follow and closely monitor his beloved Longhorns. He loved his family and friends beyond words and was passionate about reading, his work and clients, fishing, history, the Spurs and most importantly his faith in God.
Mickey is survived by his son, Chad and wife, Kathy and their son Luke of Odem, TX. He is also survived by his sister, Carolyn Reed and husband, Rick of New Braunfels; his brother Bobby and wife, Amanda of Austin. The extended family includes his sister-in-law Elsie Mitchell and her children and their families and his cousin Joe Newman and family. There were also many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews that will miss "Uncle Mickey" as he always kept up with and wanted to know what was going on with "the kids".
Our family has no appropriate words to thank all of his friends who have been so supportive of him and our family throughout this ordeal. We also want to thank all the folks at Palma Real and Kindred Hospice for taking such good care of Mickey in these last days, especially his hospice nurse Julie.
A brief visitation will be held at Colonial Funeral Home in Taft at 9:30 am Monday, February 26, 2018. Graveside service will immediately follow at 11 am at Taft Memorial Park Cemetery, Taft, TX. A memorial service will be held at 1 pm, Tuesday, February 27, 2018 at San Pedro Presbyterian Church, 14900 San Pedro Ave., San Antonio, TX.
Mickey wanted Bob Smith, Carl Pipes, Gary Hightower, Chris Jenkins, Bobby Viglini, Mike Montgomery and Larry Brezina to carry him with a host of others as honorary bearers. If you are so inclined please make a donation to Taft Public Library in Taft, Texas or San Pedro Presbyterian Church.
