MIGUEL FLORES Obituary

At age 91, our beloved husband, father, grandfather, Miguel Ramon Flores, known to many as Mike, passed away of natural causes on January 13, 2022 with family members by his side.

Mike and most of his siblings were born and raised in San Antonio at San Fernando Cemetery #2, where his father, Miguel H. Flores, was the property's co-founder and first Archdiocese superintendent as indicated on a plaque at the site's northeast corner of Castroville and Couples Rd.

He and his siblings attended St. Martin's Hall. Mike and his brothers served as altar boys at the chapel at Our Lady of the Lake University, attended Central Catholic High School and then joined the United States Armed Forces, altogether representing almost every branch of the military at that time. While serving in the Air Force in England, Mike married his first wife, Phyllis Yarwood. Together their journey back to the states included a treasure bundle, daughter Dolores M. Flores. Sadly, their joy was short lived by his wife's untimely death.

Mike then busied himself as a civilian at Kelly Air Force Base as an aircraft electrician and using the GI bill, attended St. Mary's University. In December 1955, Mike married Nancy Montemayor of Monterrey, Mexico. This marriage joined two families who were longtime friends and acquaintances dating back to the early 1900s in Ciudad Victoria, Mexico. In the span of six years, four more prized children were added to the family brood.

Mike continued in aviation services with a series of start-ups in the late 1950's in the San Antonio airport area. While at the Dee Howard Company Mike submitted an electrical system he designed and developed to the FAA, ultimately obtaining their rigorous approval. He mostly worked in sales in a wide variety of aviation services and customer relations to well-known national, international, and private corporations.

Mike later followed his own entrepreneurial spirits: fabricating aircraft interiors, custom commercial and residential furnishings for libraries, legal offices, banks, restaurants and for the Basilica of Our Lady of San Juan del Valle in San Juan, TX.

During the 1980s and not ready to retire, he pursued another fulfilling career teaching woodcraft at Fox Tech High School. There he was richly rewarded with collaborative endeavors to help students better realize their potential and spurred some to pursue the woodworking profession. Mike and his students were recognized in professional publications especially featuring intricate mosaic-like pictures (Intarsia) with exotic inlayed woods. Some large-sized Intarsia's were designed to represent professional logos and were presented with fanfare for public display to the FBI and the local American Diabetes Association.

Mike had a timely knack for taking countless people of all walks of life under his wing for either a season or a lifelong meaningful relationship. These relationships were still forging in his later years and namely with involved citizens of the city of Windcrest, including his most recent new neighbors.

Mike highly prized and treasured his wife, children, extended family, friends, and students. He was a mentor, a teacher, a born conversationalist, insatiably inquisitive, a voracious reader, an avid learner, benevolent, a world traveler, tech junkie, jack of all trades, and the best griller of baby back ribs. Even in the most mundane of times his life always exemplified la joie de vivre and he will be deeply missed.

He is survived by his wife Nancy, children and their spouses: Dolores Flores, Miguel Flores Jr., (Ester Flores), Teresa Reese, Dina Adas (Abdul Adas), and Edgar Flores (Janet Flores); his siblings Maria Angela Flores, and Jose Flores; ten beloved grandchildren, five great grandchildren, and countless loving nephews and nieces.
