Col. Robert E. Neimes, MC., U.S. Army, Retired, age 83, died August 22, 2006 after a long illness. Col. Neimes served in the U.S. Army for over 33 years. After serving as an enlisted combat engineer, he received a B.S. from De Paul University and an M.D. from the Stritch School of Medicine at Loyola University both in Chicago, IL. He served a Rotating Internship at Madigan Army Hospital in Tacoma, WA. His Pre-specialty residency in General Surgery was served at DeWitt Army Hospital in Fort Belvoir, VA where he later became Commander of the hospital and a General Surgery residency at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. He was a Board Certified General Surgeon. Dr. Neimes's many assignments include: Director, Acting Director, Deputy Director for Professional Services, and Acting Superintendent at San Antonio State Chest Hospital; Acting Superintendent at Harlingen State Chest Hospital; Chief of Staff, HQ, U.S. Army Health Services Command, Fort Sam Houston, TX. With a staff of 525, HSC is the single manager for all health resources in the continental United States; Commander, Ireland Army Hospital, Fort Knox, KY and Director of Medical Activities at Fort Knox including three outlying health clinics; Commander, 97th General Hospital, Frankfurt, Germany and Director of Medical Activities. The 97th is the largest medical activity in Europe. He commanded a general hospital and ten outlying health clinics and was responsible for the health care of more than 100,000 people; Commander, 33rd Field Hospital, Wurzburg, Germany; Commander, 12th Evacuation Hospital in Vietnam; Command and General Staff College in Fort Leavenworth, KS; Chief of Surgery at Valley Forge General Hospital, PA; Division Surgeon, 7th Infantry Division, Korea; Aviation Medical School at Brooks Air Force Base, TX as an Aviation Medical Officer; Member of the Gemini 4 Rescue Team in the Pacific; Staff Surgeon at Walson Army Hospital, Fort Dix, NJ; General Surgery residency training, Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington, D.C.; Platoon Sergeant, Combat Engineer in Europe during World War II. Col. Neimes's memberships include: Diplomate of American Board of Surgery, Fellow of American College of Surgeons, Member of Association of Military Surgeons of the United States, Society of Medical Consultants to the Armed Forces, Association of the United States Army, American Medical Association, United States-Mexico Border Health Association, Texas Medial Association, Bexar County Medical Society, Geriatrics Committee, Royal Medical Society of Britain, American Diabetes Association, Phi Chi Fraternity, Board Member, Army Medical Department Museum Foundation, Inc. (AMEDD), Honorary Alumnus, Baylor University, U.S. Army Hospital Administration, and Honorary Lifetime Member, Noncommissioned Officers' Association. His numerous military awards and decorations include: The Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Good Conduct Medal, European/African/Mediterranean Expeditionary Medal with Bronze Stars for Rhineland and Central Europe campaigns, American Theater Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Army of Occupation Medal (Germany), Vietnamese Campaign Medal with five Battle Stars, Vietnamese Service Medal, Overseas Service Bars (4), Army Aviation Medical Officer's Badge, German Army Marksmanship Badge in Bronze, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Palm (Individual) and Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Palm (Unit). He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Martin Regina; his brothers, Thomas and Carl; his sisters, Marie, Rosemary, and Carol. He is survived by his loving wife Kay; sisters, Elizabeth Jesse of San Antonio and Loretta Hannan of Chicago, IL and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held Monday, August 28, 2006 at 9:30 A.M. at the Colonial Funeral Home. Col. Neimes will be buried at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery with full military honors immediately following the memorial services.
