Patsy Libby Obituary

PATSY MARIE PAPE LIBBY
April 20, 1934 - December 22, 2024
Patsy Marie Pape Libby, born April 20, 1934, in San Antonio, Texas, the daughter of Alfred and Lydia (Kocurek) Pape, entered her eternal reward on December 22, 2024. She was a pillar of the community, contributing in big ways and small to schools, colleges, and organizations in San Antonio. After graduating from Incarnate Word High School and Incarnate Word College, she worked as a social worker at the San Antonio State Hospital, followed by a career with the Girl Scouts.

She married John Libby in 1962 and together they raised a family of five sons and one daughter. Patsy was very engaged in the community and volunteered with the Girl Scouts, St. Anthony School, Incarnate Word High School, Central Catholic High School, and Incarnate Word College, where she was recognized as Distinguished Alumna in 1987. As a homemaker, she was an excellent cook, a gift she passed on to her children. She was a skilled needleworker who made clothes and quilts, she knitted, and she was adept with intricate needlepoint and embroidery.

Patsy was a talented musician who earned bachelor's and master's degrees in music. For decades, she played the organ at Catholic parishes in San Antonio, most recently at Our Lady of Sorrows, where she played until 2020; she also played for countless weddings and funerals. She made tens of thousands of rosaries, donating the vast majority of them to local Catholic schools and to missions around the world. She took custom orders for high-quality rosaries, using the proceeds to purchase supplies for the rosaries that she donated.

After her children were grown, Patsy and John traveled extensively within the United States, Europe, and the Holy Land. She had many fond memories of these travels, which she held dear following John's death in 2007.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Alfred and Lydia Pape; her husband, John Richard Libby; sisters Dorothy Ann Veach and Mary Loretta Jacobsmeyer; and brothers Alfred Joseph Pape Jr. and Thomas Joseph Pape. She is survived by sister Barbara Jean Paparella; children Joseph Patrick, Father Richard Anthony, Robert Francis (Karen), Mary Elizabeth Sullivan (Patrick), David James (Anne), and Charles Michael (Jola); grandchildren Benjamin Francis Libby, Annalise Michelle Libby, Natalie Therese Libby, Julia Rose Libby, Sally Marie Sullivan, Elizabeth Anne Sullivan, Margaret Mary Sullivan, and Jeremy Winthrop Hardgrove Libby; and great-grandchild Elizabeth Grace Sullivan.

Her family would like to extend gratitude to in-home caregivers from Hearts at Home Senior Care for enabling her to live independently over the last decade, as well as the nurses, therapists, and staff at the Village of Incarnate Word for the high quality of care she received during the final year of her life.
