Richard Medellin Obituary

June 14, 1927 - March 3, 2017
Richard Camacho Medellin ("R.C.") was born in Somerset, Texas and is survived by his devoted wife of 73 years, Maria Victoria Medellin. Together they had 3 children, 7 grandchildren, and 7 great grandchildren: Son, Richard M. Medellin Jr. and his wife Mary E. Medellin and their children Richard Medellin III and wife Reina Medellin and great grandsons Damian Medellin and Timothy Medellin, Rachel Christina Solis and husband Roberto Solis and great grandchildren Carolina Solis and Elijah Solis, and Elisa Marie Medellin; Son, Roland M. Medellin and his son Roland Michael Medellin and his wife Yvonne Medellin and great granddaughter Ava Medellin; Daughter, Rachel Medellin Treviño and her husband Joe A. Treviño and their children, Julian Jose Treviño and his wife Elisa Marie Treviño and great granddaughters Isabella Rose Treviño and Juliana Rae Treviño, Adrian Andres Treviño, and Liana Rachel Treviño .
Our father was a remarkable man. He was a man that knew how to give and receive love unconditionally. He lived a very active life filled with love, joy, determination, and an unbelievable ability to give of himself without expectation. He had an enormous personality and a warm sense of humor with a smile so infectious it would light up every corner of any room he stood in. He would often say that his greatest accomplishment was marrying our mother, Maria Victoria, whom he loved more than he could express. They married at the ages of 14 and 15 and were married over 73 years. They came from humble beginnings and together with his relentless work ethic and our mother's uncanny ability to invest in real estate, they were an unstoppable team.

R. C. had an incredible work ethic, which he passed on to his children and grandchildren. He often expressed that living for others was how true happiness could be attained. He taught us that living for others is a life filled with purpose and happiness. As a result, he became the patriarch to our wonderful family. He was also an accomplished insurance salesman. Earning many honors and awards throughout his career, he eventually went on to receive the prestigious honor of national recognition. He had a successful 32-year long stint with American National Insurance Company (ANICO) and completed an additional 20 years as an independent insurance broker. He spent the last years of his life managing his investment properties and developed a wide breadth of knowledge in plumbing, carpentry, and renovation along the way. It was through the management of these properties that he employed his grandsons with their first jobs doing basic landscaping and trash collection on the premises of these properties, instilling within them the value of hard work and what it means to earn an honest living.

Although R.C. eventually moved to the North Side of San Antonio, he never forgot where he came from and remained a familiar face on the West Side of San Antonio's restaurants, tire shops, produce markets, and other local businesses. While driving on the streets of the West Side with his beloved wife Victoria and only daughter Rachel, they would often hear his name "Medellin!" being shouted out to him from friends in the area that knew him well. Needless to say, R.C. was a very friendly, charming, and distinguished man who had countless friends and acquaintances everywhere he went. He was genuinely loved by all.

R.C. served in the U.S. Army in 1945 and was a member of "The Greatest Generation". This was a generation that personified the true meaning of self-sacrifice and valued the characteristics of loyalty, pragmatism, modesty and integrity, which he exemplified so well throughout his lifetime. When he gave his word, he meant it and it was often said that his word was better than any signed contract. He was truly a cut above the rest. He leaves behind a strong legacy of love, honor, hard work, loyalty, and will undoubtedly be missed by all who knew him. Although R.C. was a remarkable businessman with many talents, he will best be remembered for his boundless love and limitless generosity. His love for God and his family was unsurpassed and his legacy will be passed on for generations to come.

The Medellin family would like to extend special thanks to Dr. Neela Patel for the compassion and care she exhibited to towards R.C throughout his illness. Also special thanks to his devoted caregivers.

OUR THOUGHTS ARE WITH YOU ALL

The tide recedes, but leaves behind bright seashells on the sand.
The sun goes down, but gentle warmth still lingers in the land.
The music stops, and yet it echoes on in sweet refrains.
For every joy that passes, something beautiful remains.

And that is his love for each of you and the wonderful & beautiful memories he made with you all...

Our deepest condolences,

RC was an incredible man with a huge heart. My step father Richard Rendon, will forever be great full for his generosity and his support not only as his employer but as a close friend and mentor. We will keep his memory in our hearts forever. My 11 year old daughter Nina Garcia will always remember the small gifts given to her by him. The smile on both my daughters face and RC when they would see each other will last forever in memory . Nina always looked forward in seeing RC. He loved making children happy. Condolences to the family in behalf of the Garcia Family.
