Dr. Richard Joseph Tamez, loving father, husband, and physician who passionately served the San Antonio community for over 50 years passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 22, 2014. Dr. Tamez took his spiritual transition at the home he built for his family over 44 years ago overlooking the beautiful Alamo City.
Dr. Tamez, a native San Antonian, was born on December 12, 1928. His early education took him through Beacon Hill Elementary School, Mark Twain Middle School and Thomas Jefferson High School. In 1948, he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from St. Mary's University. Dr. Tamez attended graduate school at The University of Texas at Austin, and went on to the Kansas City College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery for his medical training. He interned at Ohio State University Hospital where he went on to complete a five-year residency in general surgery. Dr. Tamez became Board Certified in General Surgery in 1957 and went into private family practice from 1983 to 2004 - serving San Antonio's West Side Community for over 20 years.
When asked about the early years of his practice Dr. Tamez reminisced, "The fees were minimal, and my practice grew fast. I made house calls and home child birth deliveries. There was no Medicare, no welfare or health maintenance care as it is today, but we were able to serve the community." Nothing was more rewarding to him than serving those in need. "Helping people in need is what keeps you going for over 50 years," he said.
Dr. Tamez was a member of the Westside Lions Club, the Board of Directors for the Westside YMCA, and the Directors for Los Sembradores de Amistad, the Texas Medical Association, Texas Academy of Family Practice, and the Bexar County Medical Society. He served as team physician for Little League Baseball at Elmendorf Park, Chief of Staff at the former Alamo General Hospital, and medical advisor for the Salvation Army.
Dr. Tamez will be greatly missed by all whose lives he touched and inspired.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Mary Lou Tamez. Together, they shared many wonderful years traveling the world, and enjoying life with their family and dear friends.
Dr. Tamez is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Richard P. and Irma Tamez of McAllen, Texas; daughter and son-in-law, Dr. Marisa C. and Dr. Jorge A. Inigo of Edinburg, Texas; son and daughter-in-law, Maurice R.
