Sister Theresa O'Toole died peacefully at her home, the Convent of the Holy Spirit and Mary Immaculate, early Thanksgiving morning, November 23, 2023, a fitting day for one whose whole life was as an Act of Gratitude to God for his goodness to her.
Born on July 12, 1930 in Clifden, County Galway, Ireland she was the third of ten children of Martin and Mary O'Toole. In 1950 she left the pristine beaches and mountains of Connemara to begin her life as a foreign missionary, a journey that would take her to 11 schools in Missouri, Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi and ultimately to the Western Province of Zambia.
She spent her last 20 years of active ministry as a spiritual director at Oblate Renewal Center. Sister Theresa often said that the "God of Surprises" was always waiting for her when she arrived at her next assignment. She thrived on the experiences and stories of faith that her students and her spiritual directees shared with her. She treasured all of them in her heart and then took them with her back to God.
Sister Theresa is mourned by her sisters, Anne O'Toole and Sister Enda O'Toole, RCE, her many nieces and nephews, her religious community, and her many friends.
FUNERAL SERVICES
A Rosary will be recited at 10:00 A.M. on Thursday, November 30, 2023, followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 A.M. Services will be held at the Motherhouse Chapel, 300 Yucca, San Antonio, Texas, and she will be interred in the Community Cemetery.
