May 15, 1948 - September 28, 2025
Thomas Irwin Guggolz, a devoted husband, father, businessman and lifelong San Antonian, passed away on September 28, 2025, at the age of 77.
Born on May 15, 1948, in Lufkin, Texas, Tom moved to San Antonio with his family as a child. He graduated from Alamo Heights High School in 1966, where he was a proud member of the tennis team. He enjoyed and continued playing tennis throughout his whole life. Tom went on to earn his Bachelor's Degree in Economics from Tulane University in 1969, where he was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity and a member of the Tulanians singing group. He later received a Master's Degree in Business from Trinity University and a Degree in Petroleum Land Management from the University of Texas. After college, Tom served as an officer in the United States Air Force Reserves, stationed at Lackland Air Force Base.
Tom married the love of his life, Margarite Parker, in 1977 in San Antonio. Their marriage was one of joy, laughter, teamwork, adventure (planned and unplanned), and happiness lasting 48 years. Together, they raised two children and built a life centered around faith, family, and community. Christian principles and ethics guided his life, especially in the way he led and influenced his family.
A successful businessman and respected figure in San Antonio's commercial real estate industry, Tom worked for D. Ansley Company for many years before establishing himself as a real estate developer and entrepreneur. His professionalism, integrity, and mentorship left a lasting impression on colleagues and friends alike. For Tom, good business meant all parties benefited. He always strived for satisfaction for all involved in the deal.
Tom's passion for music was a defining part of his life. He was a lifelong member of the choir at Laurel Heights United Methodist Church and sang with the San Antonio Mastersingers for over 40 years. Whether through music or conversation, his voice brought warmth and joy to those around him.
A dedicated family man, Tom never missed one of his children's ballet recitals or sports games. He was present, supportive and full of encouragement. He enjoyed fine dining, classical music, Turner Classic Movies and time spent with family at the ranch in Maverick County.
Tom was interested and participated in San Antonio's civic and cultural life. He was an active member of numerous organizations and clubs including the Texas Cavaliers, The Order of the Alamo, San Antonio German Club, Alamo Kiwanis Club, Conopus Club of San Antonio, Old Trail Drivers of Texas Association, the San Antonio Lamplighters, The Pilon Club, The San Antonio Country Club, The Argyle and Club Giraud.
Kind, outgoing and known for his unique sense of humor and contagious laugh, Tom had a natural ability to connect with people. He made everyone feel at ease and left lasting impressions wherever he went; everyone loved Tom.
Tom is survived by his wife, Margarite Parker Guggolz, daughter Eloise Guggolz Steed (Michael), granddaughter Hallie Parker Steed, son Hal Joseph Guggolz, cousin Bess Rice, sister-in-law Lynn Gissel and nieces Carolyn Roch and Elaine Young (Donnie).
