W.D. Harris Obituary
Rev. W.D. Harris was born March 15, 1940 in Smithville, Texas. He entered into eternal rest May 19, 2017 at his home in San Marcos, Texas. He was preceded in death by his wife Bettye Powell Harris, his parents, Helen Willis Harris and Rev. A.T. Harris and one Brother Elvis Harris. He is survived by sisters Faye and Shirley Harris, brothers Arthur and Dwight (Josephine) Harris, Stepdaughters Bernadette Spears, (Ronnell) and Shelia Henderson, (Orlando) Stepsons Milton Powell, (Shunne) George Powell, (Erin) and Michael Powell, (Sherri) and their children. In addition there are also many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends to mourn his loss.
At an early age Rev. Harris accepted Christ as his savior after realizing that Jesus loved him and paid for his sins. He graduated from Burnett High School in Terrell, Texas (1959) Roxbury Community College Boston, Massachusetts (1977) and The American International Bible Seminary in San Antonio, Texas (1995). He began his pastoral career in the AME church in October 1985 serving in many churches in the Southwest and Central Texas Conferences of the 10th Episcopal District. Among his charges were Wesley Chapel San Marcos, Hodges Chapel San Antonio, and Bethel Luling. He was mandatorily retired in 2015 after 30 years in the AME Church. Not willing to give up preaching the Word he accepted the call of New Union Baptist Church in Flatonia, Texas where he preached until God called him home. He is now forever at rest with God.
Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 pm, Saturday, May 27, 2017, at the First United Methodist Church in San Marcos. Interment to follow at the San Marcos City Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests scholarship donations be made to: Paul Quinn College Support, C/O Tenth Episcopal District AME Church, 4347 S Hampton Road, Suite 245, Dallas, Texas 75232.
