Wilbur Davis Obituary

Wilbur Calvin Davis, October 10, 1930 to May 16, 2008. Wilbur was born October 10, 1930 in Omaha, Nebraska and as a child moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma where he graduated high school. In 1949 he moved to Helotes, Texas where he currently lived. In 1953 he married his bride of 55 years, Yolanda Algueseva. They were blessed with two children, a son Wilbur Charles and daughter Lois Suzette. Wilbur was always one to figure out a way to make a buck, from raising chickens and throwing papers as a boy in Tulsa, to serving up beer on the weekends as a young man at John T. Floore's country store in Helotes. He served his country for nine years in the Army reserves and during this time began working as a clerk at the Dunn & Bradstreet office's in San Antonio. His next job began his career in the steel business and is also where he picked up the nickname of Junior which he was known as in the industry. He worked as the production manager for Irwin Steel Company in San Antonio where he learned and grew his knowledge of the reinforcing steel fabrication business. Before starting his own rebar shop he saw a need in the Helotes area for a feed store. Since he had a full time job he would store feed and hay at his house and sell to the local community. This was the start of D&G Enterprises. In 1968 he left Irwin Steel and out of his backyard began selling rebar to various residential and small commercial customers. As the business grew he purchased a small piece of property in old Helotes and began building a shop. D&G Enterprises remained there until 1975 when it moved to its current location and is now known as CMC Rebar San Antonio. He always had a love for real estate and was always looking for a deal. This enabled him to attain his dream place. Rancho del Viejo. It was here that he would fulfill those dreams from growing an apple orchard, raising exotic deer, to building a new flower bed or just kicking back. This was surely God's place on earth for him. Wilbur is survived by his wife Yolanda, his son Wilbur Charles and wife Heidi, daughter Suzy Rhodes, son-in-law Darren Rhodes, granddaughters, Celeste, Camille, Corinne, Jordan, Alli and Alexis, sister and brother-in-law Lois and Charles Leonard, brother-in-law, Ray Menchaca, sister-in-law, Elvira Menchaca, numerous nephews and nieces. The family thanks all the doctors and nurses at the Methodist Hospital who worked so hard to keep him with us as long as he was. Visitation will be on Wednesday, May 21, 2008 at Sunset Northwest Funeral Home on Bandera Road from 6:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. with a rosary at 7:00 P.M. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:00 A.M. Thursday, May 22, 2008 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Helotes, with Rev. Carlos Davalos officiating. Interment will follow at Our Lady of Guadalupe Cemetery in Helotes.
