I loved being a "Buckoe" and working on stars for my camp hat. It truly was an innocent time in my life and I still have great memories! Every time I drive down Hwy 56 I always look at the former camp site and remember the great lessons in life I had there. It was a memorable time and I was crushed when the camp closed. My brothers and I had a great time being part of the Buckoes family. It was a fun way to be a country kid in San Diego. Sorry for your loss.

Uncle Dave as I knew him was a kind man that certainly paved his own way through life as an intelligent and skilled veterinarian. Winters in my youth were spent skiing in Aspen fortunate enough to have his place to stay at and his guitars to play. I never really did get the hang of guitar playing but it was a nice way to spend time with him after a day on the slopes for this lucky kid. I was also lucky to reconnect with him after many years of not skiing or going to Colorado at all and the small amount of time we spent together was very reassuring that we don't always change that much and that his goodwill towards me remained. I'll always be proud of my Uncle Dave.

My deepest sympathies and condolences go to the Kenney family. I was part of the family and worked at Buckoes summer day camp when my sister Kathy was married to Bill, "Skimp", Davids younger brother and have many fond memories of those yesteryear days. Davids live and career ENRICHED so many of us. He will be sorely missed. Ron Brown

Everybody wrote such elegant things about Dr. Kenney I was a camp counselor at Buckoes and had such a crush on him! He taught me so much about horses and taking care of them I still use. He would give us a box of syringes and vaccines and we would as teenagers give shot to al 40 plus ponies and horse, He made us feel grown up and confident, I got to ride his old horse Pawnee and he was the best ever trained horse I have ever rode....God Bless His family and friends he will be missed! I was sorry to hear that David lost his battle. He lived a long and very full life doing what he loved. My fondest memory is of him taking the time to teach his shy 14 year old cousin(me) how to dance. What a treasure he was. The animals that found their way into his world were the lucky ones. He will be so missed by all that knew and loved him. Loving cousin Marti Bousman

We would like David's family to know we hugely regret David will not be with us for the LJHS Class of 1952, 60th Reunion. We sorely miss all classmates who will not be with us but especially David. His was a life well lived, an inspiration. It was a privilege and an honor to have known him.

The many stories I heard about David painted a picture of a man who was an animal whisper. A talented man who was driven. His drive changed the understanding man had of/and with animals. I will keep all those wonderful memories in my heart. Best wishes to his entire family especially my good friend Miles.

Appreciate all that are sharing their messages of friendship with my father David. These mean a lot to the family.

I am so sorry to hear about the passing of David. I first met David when he lived in the Defense Housing. We had great times together, rode horses together and attended SDSC together. WE studied together in the Food Commons every day. David originally wanted to be a brain surgeon. We both stopped ridding broncos when David said he was affraid of injuring his hands. When David finally went off to Med-School he changed his mind about the brain surgeon and went to Davis for a DVM probably because he loved animals. We stayed friends for many years, but didn't see each other that often. I followed his career with great interest and admiration. David was a nice man who was not affected by the many accomplishes in his life. One time I took my dog to him when he was in private practice. I arrived late in the day and his nursing assistant had already left for the day. A woman brought a Doxson in that was trying to welp, but having difficulty. David said he needed me to help him in a C-Secton operation which I did. There were 5 pups born that day. David also offered to give one of my sons a job in his practice because my son was interested getting a DVM. David told me once that a friend was going to pay his way through med school and all he would have to do is do the same for someone else as a pay back. I don't know if that ever happened. I lost touch with David after he moved to Colorado, but I still followed his notoriety with the bear cubs. I will never forget my friend David Kenny. I am only two months older than David. May God bless and keep him and all the ones that loved him.

Many happy memories of my beloved Uncle David! He cut a handsome and dashing figure as the first vet at Sea World. A brilliant mind and a gifted storyteller of his many colorful adventures, he will be missed by us all. My love to Shane, Miles and Gwendolyn, and to my mother (Jinx Ecke), Aunt Mendy and Uncle Skimp on the loss of their brother. xoxo Sara

David was one of my classmates at La Jolla '52 and was recogized for his special talents many of us did not have, even by age 18. I am saddened to know David lost his battle, but I and his classmates will always remember him as a gifted and handsome guy. Colorado lost one of the very best DVMs. My Condolences to all his family.

My first memory of meeting David was nearly 40 years ago. As I walked into his home in University City, a little chimpanzee ran down the hall, sprung into the air and, to my surprise, landed right into my arms. This was my introduction to David and his incredible veterinarian career. My thoughts and prayers are with the family.

Dave was a long term friend. We first met him when he was a willing Vet in the early days of our marriage, when he helped 4 intrepid "cowboys" put on a San Diego to Borrego Springs Trail Ride for 3 consecutive years. He brought skill and expertise, and humanity to the handling of the horses during these adventures. Later we saw him in his accomplishments at Sea World with marine mammals. Dave had marvelous rapport with animals, always seeming to be able to think like the animal, whether it was a dog, a whale, an ant-eater, or a dolphin. Many more adventures ensued; catching dolphins in Mexico; walking Orcas around and around their pools to get them acclimated; treating vitamin deficiency, and hydrocarbon poisoning; always forging into new territory with the marine mammals, especially in their welfare during transport and adaptation. He had a marvelous mind, and explored all manner of thoughts and theories in medicine. We missed him when he moved back to Colorado, but enjoyed going to his wedding to Connie in Aspen, and sking when visiting with him in Snowmass. Our love and condolences to all the families. May Dave's spirit continue in his children and grandchildren, and his memory remain with all those who knew him.

Davids brother WB Kenney ought to have had MD by his name.
I would like to add one of my favorite photos of my brother David from when I was a child in the 40s. This photo is taken on Miramar Mesa.
