Dieter Vongehr Obituary

VONGEHR, DIETER Dec. 5, 1935 to Nov. 4, 2007
Dieter Vongehr was born in Tilsit, East Prussia. During WWII, as refugees, his family settled in a town outside of Cologne, Germany where Dieter grew up with his mother, older brother, and two sisters. Finishing school at the age of 15, he apprenticed for three years before becoming a certified mechanic. Taking an opportunity to come to the U.S. in 1957, he accepted a job as a mechanic the day after he arrived and continued to work on cars for thirty-eight years. In 1960, he opened his own repair shop, Dieters, and married the love of his life, Ria. As a dedicated, hard working businessman, his goal was to have the best Porsche and BMW repair shop in the San Diego area. For many years Dieter was a member of the Porsche Club of America of San Diego and was president of the club in 1973. He was a man of great integrity and it showed in all he did. Dieter will be remembered as a devoted husband, caring father, fun-loving grandfather, and man of great faith. He was a man of few words with an enormous love of life who took great care of his family and had many friends. He loved Porsches, good food (especially chocolate), and traveling. He will be greatly missed. He is survived by his wife, Ria, daughters Nadia (and husband Chuck) Clayton of Valley Center, Monique (and husband Daniel) Vongehr of Murphys, California, granddaughters Lindsay and Krista Clayton, brother Michael Vongehr, and sisters Rosemarie Rentsch and Jutta Romero. Memorial Mass will be held Monday, November 12th, 11:00 a.m. at St. Martins Church, 7710 El Cajon Blvd., La Mesa. In lieu of flower, contributions can be made to Doctors Without Borders, PO Box 5022, Hagerstown, MD 21741-9804.Please sign the guest book at obituaries.uniontrib.com

I first met Dieter in 1979 after buying my first Porsche, a '67 912. Two Porsches later and I'm still bringing my cars in to Dieter's. He was a wonderful man who will be terribly missed.

I was so saddened to hear of Dieter's passing. He was one of the most gentle, kindest men I have every had the priviledge to know. The time, it seems a life time ago, Nadia and I went with him to the car show in San Francisco is one of my favorite memories.

I hope knowing that he now lives in the company of angels gives you some comfort.
With great sadness,
Lisa

Please accept my thoughts and prayers. Here is a poem we used when my mother died, I hope it helps you find peace.

God saw he was getting tired a cure was not to be, so he put his arms around him and whispered "Come with Me". With tearful eyes we watched him suffer, and saw him fade away, although we loved him dearly, we could not make him stay. A golden heart stopped beating, hard working hands to rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us, he only takes the best.

To Ria and family members of Dieter,

I was very sorry to read of Dieters passing. He was a wonderful person in all respects and always conducted himself as a very honorable man.

In 1970 I met Dieter when I bought my 1st Porsche, a 1958 Speedster. Throughout the years he took care of another Porsche and then a BMW. Ria, he bought my 1985 BMW 535i for you but the clutch was to hard to depress for you so he sold it...It was always a pleasure to do business with Dieter because of his skills, honesty and a good sense of humor.....

The photograph in the Union Tribune today captured Dieter's smile perfectly and it is the way that I will always remember him.
