Donald Smith Obituary

Smith, Donald W. CHULA VISTA -- Donald W. Smith "Doc" was born May 19,1934 in Terre Haute, Indiana, and passed away peacefully August 7, 2013 after a long and valiant battle against complications from diabetes. Doc is survived by his daughter, Rhonda Fleisler, granddaughter Danielle Gallegos, and great-grandson Isaiah; his daughter, Eileen Smith, granddaughters Chelsea and Nicole Smith, and grandson Bryce Smith; and his son, Kevin M. Smith. He is also survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Roxie and Dale Ball; and sister, Sherry Smith; in addition to many devoted friends, especially Ally Andrus and Deanna Reynolds. Doc enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1953, carrying on a family tradition, and was stationed at Camp Pendleton. He married and settled in Chula Vista, raising his three children. He served in Vietnam, rising to the rank of Captain and was Honorably Discharged in 1973. His military funeral service will be held at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in Point Loma on Wednesday, Sept. 4, at 9:00 am. A Celebratory Wake will be held at the Manhattan on Broadway and G, in Chula Vista that same Wednesday from 5:30-7:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, his family and friends invite contributions to the American Diabetes Assoc.
