Garry Weigand Obituary

Garry grew up in Columbus, OH, and attended Ohio University. A member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity, he graduated with a B.A. in Economics in 1966. Commissioned an Ensign in the US Navy, he earned his USN pilot wings in 1968. He began his aviation career flying the F-8, and later the F-4 at Miramar Naval Air Station. Deployed to Vietnam in 1971, he served three ten-month cruises aboard the USS Coral Sea, amassed 543 aircraft carrier landings, flew over 200 combat missions, downed a MiG-17 in air-to-air combat, and was a recipient of the Silver Star. Wags was both a graduate and instructor at the Navy Fighter Weapons School, better known as "Top Gun". He continued his service as a reserve officer while flying commercially for PSA/US Airways. He enjoyed traveling with his wife, playing with his grandchildren, and "golfing off" with the Slugs. An avid OSU football fan, he spent most autumn Saturdays rooting for his Buckeyes. Garry is survived by his wife Jodie, his children Marsi, Robin and Chad, and his grandchildren, Mischa and Nico. He will be interred in Miramar National Cemetery in a private ceremony.

Garry, Tom and I were devastated to learn what happened after you were gone. We know how much your family meant to you, and it´s painful to know they were not honored as they should have been. But love is eternal, and we believe that, in time, things will be made right. May you rest in peace, knowing you are deeply missed. Love, Tom and Helen.

Garry we traveled a bunch of trails together as kids. I have many fond memories of family picnics, parties and other occasions over the years. Your military experiences during the Vietnam Era were exemplary. You were a great friend with lasting memories. You "Loved Many and Trusted a Few, but always paddled your own canoe." Farewell Garry! Garry was a member of the Columbus,OH West High School Graduating Class of June,1961. He had many friends and earned respect from all the faculty and many classmates. It was no surprise to read about all Garry´s achievements. I am sure many of our mutual friends join me in sending condolences to Jodi and family.

Garry was in my Beta pledge class along with a great group of high caliber young men. He was always smiling and positive and willing to help any one that needed it. Our friendship spanned the decades and rekindled the last few years where we were rewarded by spending time with and Jodie. We are grateful to his exemplary service to our country and for setting an example we all should follow. We will miss him but he will forever be in our hearts.

Great guy, a good friend. Hadn’t seen him in a few years and I’m sorry about that. He was in my wedding party in 1971.

Gary was always a friendly, can do, but low keyed guy while a Beta at Ohio University. He exemplified the type of guy that would receive the Silver Star. I am sorry our paths did not cross in the Navy or in California.
