George R. Saunders

1926 - 2018

George R. Red' Saunders March 10, 1926 - February 12, 2018 Carlsbad Born in Council Bluff, Iowa. Grew up in Nashville, TN. Left home to work in a railroad yard until old enough to join the Marines. Fought in the Pacific (Recon Unit) and in Korea became a tank platoon commander (wounded 3 times). Retired after 22 years. Sports: pool and golf. Always had a pocket full of O.P.'s money and eager to lend or give money to Marine buddies. Legacy: Marine Corps Tankers Association, founded in 1972 in Red's Golden Tee Tavern (Carlsbad). MCTA is now national; it offers scholarships and fellowship to tankers and their families. Mr. Saunders was a devoted American patriot who ventured above and beyond his call to duty. All will remember Red's wit... he was born a "gift" to make people smile! Memorial service: American Legion in Vista at 1300 on 19 May.
