HAROLD NEMER Obituary

NEMER, HAROLD Harold Nemer, "Hal," was born on May 25, 1927, in Evansville, In., and died on July 6, 2012, at San Diego Hospice. He was preceded in death by a twin brother, Howard, in 1945 and another brother, Roscoe (Rocky), in 1952. He leaves his wife Jean and daughters Rhonda Lene, Miquette Nemer, and sons Richard Williams (Genelle), Mathew Williams (Joanie), and Andrew Williams (Nicol). Hal also has eight grandchildren: Logan, Allegra, Cassidy, Camryn, Ellie, Hailey, Jessica, and David; and, a great grandchild, Finley. A brother, Willard (Dodie), lives in Evansville, and there are numerous nieces and nephews. Hal had a distinguished 25 year career in the U.S. Navy as a pilot. He learned to fly at age sixteen and entered the US Navy after high school in 1945 retiring in 1970 as a Commander. Hal, nicknamed "Nemo," flew over fifty military aircraft mostly off of aircraft carriers including the USS Ticonderoga and the Oriskany. He also saw duty at the Naval War College and the Pentagon. Hal also earned an engineering degree from Stanford University. After retiring from the Navy, Hal began a second career as a professor at Riverside City College from 1971 until 1995. He taught statistics and astronomy and was chair of the Physical Science Department. He and Jean then moved to Ramona, Ca. where they resided for 13 years. They also lived part-time in Coronado. One of Hal's most interesting pursuits was involvement in the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA Chapter One at Flabob Airport located near Riverside). He spent many hours restoring vintage aircraft and assisting in building experimental planes. Hal and his friend, Phil Denham (Anne), recently donated a Stinson 105 plane to the Wathem Foundation at Flabob Airport. Hal's log book of over 60 years of flying attests to his love and skill in flying all types of aircraft from vintage bi-planes and racers to jets and gliders. He was a test pilot of numerous experimental and home-built planes and was very involved in encouraging youngsters to become pilots through the Young Eagles program of EAA. In 1986 Hal flew a home-built plane called "Baby Bird" at Camarillo Airport. With a 6' wingspan, the plane and Hal Nemer hold the Guinness Book of World Records for flight in the world's smallest monoplane. Baby Bird is now at the EAA Museum in Oshkosh, Wi. Hal's greatest enjoyment in his later years after moving to Point Loma was volunteering for the USS Midway at the Restoration Hanger at North Island where he and his buddies restored Navy planes that are now aboard the aircraft carrier. A beautifully restored TBM with his squadron colors is included aboard the carrier with his name under the cockpit, "Hal 'Nemo' Nemer." The model in the plane wears his flight suit and goggles. His friend and navigator aboard the TBM, Tom Porter (Peggy), donated funds to help restore the plane, and Tom's name appears on the plane as well. A military ceremony will take place at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery on August 31st, at 2:30 p.m. Hal's final wish was to have his ashes scattered by aircraft off of Point Loma. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Flying Midshipmen Endowment Fund, USS Midway Museum, 910 N. Harbor Drive, San Diego, CA, 92101.

I met Hal on a number of occasions when visiting my mother in Riverside. Hal was her next-door neighbor. Hal was always very friendly. My mom, in her '70s, had difficulty rolling the trash can down the steep driveway to the street, so I appreciated very much that Hal did that for her. Hal offered to take me flying once, but I had to attend a wedding - darn!!!

Hal was one of the finest men we have ever had the honor of knowing. A true pleasure to be around and his demeanor was such that one would never know he was a man of so many accomplishments. To know him better, visit The Midway and see the plane he flew - a dive bomber it is good grief! Rest in peace Hal, we know your up there in wild blue yonder. Our thoughts and prayers are with you Jean - he left a void in many hearts - he will never be forgotten.

I will always remember the happy years that Bill and I spent with Hal and "the group" at Flabob. Everyone worked together and many things were accomplished and much of this was due to Hal's involvement. Now Hal has joined his good friend Ron Caraway. My sympathy and prayers are with you Jean. I how you will keep in touch.

Hi Jean....It was so good meeting you and seeing Nemo after a gap of 50 plus years. Hal and I were in many of the same classes at Ottumwa....with many memories. I thought he would be the last man standing. He was certainly one of the last pilots flying. We woud love to see you at the FMA Reunion in Monterey in September.
Our fondest regards, Bill & Barbara Busse

I only knew Hal briefly but thought him an engaging, fascinating, warm, funny person. Upon reading his biography, I see he followed his passion and lived to the fullest. I am so happy he became Jean's soul mate and for the joy they shared together. May his soul rest until they are again. I want to extend my love and sympathy to everyone he touched.

We were fortunate to meet Hal's acquaintance and we are thankful to Mel's grandparents and long time friends of Hal, Coleman and Jane Goatley, for linking us up with Hal and Jean while we were living in Los Angeles while I was studying at the University of Southern California.

We will never forget our trips to San Diego and in particular our tour of the USS Midway with Hal. To be with him and have him as a guide for something he was truly passionate about was a real treat. Hal and wife Jean were extremely hospitable to our two young children and us. The children enjoyed running around and playing with Hal immensely.

In closing, I would like to last say what an honor was to meet such an esteemed gentleman as Hal, even though he was only part of our lives for a short duration. His service to country, others, and his legacy in aviation is truly worthy of emulation. America has lost a great son.

Love,

The Deschaine Family (Justin, Melany, Lorelei, and Levi)
