I only knew Jim through a personal connection, and he was the truest of friends. His humor, love of college football, a glass of wine, and a good laugh, made for good company on any occasion. I admired his intelligence, grounded attitude, and family devotion. I lost touch with Jim and Lea as my life took a different turn, but Jim left an everlasting footprint. The world is a better place because he walked here. Lea, lucky you! Your life was blessed with an amazing man. Connie May Fleischer

We recently heard of Jim's passing and were shocked and saddened. Jim and Lea were landlords and friends in the office I had my law practice. What a great couple!! Lea and Jim were always kind and thoughtful. We are so sorry and extend condolences to Lea. We last saw Jim and Lea from afar in Customs in Brazil. We know they had a fun adventure in South America.
Best wishes

I met Jim in'77 while officing across the parking lot betwween us on 3rd and 4th Streets in Escondido. Jim always had the bigger car and more affluent clientele. When my first client opposite Jim [big red Larry from Ramona] told me in confidence he planned to break Jim's legs, I called my warning. Hell with confidentiality. Jim's reply, "They all say that". I knew then the guy was special. We became Vice Presidents of Navy League together then went to bat for Mike Greer during hard times in town. He called in ''92 to say he'd introduced my candidacy with the state bar for grandfather certification status , and stood by me whenever the roof caved in on me time and again. His nationwide gang of great lawyers were always made available to me by his generous referral. My hat's off to your guy, Lea. He died on my son, Peter's 27th and grandson Max's first birthdays. I'll never forget him. For his propinquity in perpetuity, I pray. God Bless. Condolences. Peter Mueller.

Mr. Hennenhoefer was a giant in the area of family law. I so respected him he is the only boss I could not bring myself to call my his first name; he would say, "Kathy" call me "Jim" and I said "I can't". He also went to a lot of trouble when I got married to help me pick out my husband's wedding present, a watch. Love to his Wife, Lea and his family. A loss to this world and the family law community; locally, nationally, and internationally.

James was indeed a wonderful man with great spirits. We had the priviledge of meeting him about 10 years ago, and his vibrant character soon stood out to us. May his kind soul rest in heaven. Our condolensces and prayers to the Hennenhofer family. This indeed was a great loss.

A gentleman -through and through- and a well- respected lawyer. It was a pleasure to have met both Jim and Leah (both of whom and in their own right) persons held in high respect around and in the Vista Courthouse. Jim's reputation preceded him but meeting him only solidified that impression. He was a good man and I'm glad our life paths crossed. Thank you Jim and now rest.

Jim lived life to its fullest. He was devoted to family, and very generous to his extended family, of which we are part. He was a star regionally and nationally among family law attorneys. With his clients, he made sure that he was "Captain of the Ship." To his opponents he offered the stark choice of settling favorably or being taken to the mat.
Away from work, he collected old, beautiful and rare pocket watches, which he wound regularly as he contemplated the intricate mechanisms. He adored his Shar-pei dogs because they exhibited loyalty and protectiveness, qualities he himself exhibited as a Commander (retired) in the U.S. Naval Intelligence.
In our precious hours with him, we will not forget his enthusiasm and vast knowledge of the way things work. He left us too quickly, and without final words, but we surmise that his words might have been: Use your time well, and be loyal and true to one another.

I am very honored to have known Jim and to count him as my friend. I have known him since 1997 when I first moved into his office building. I have had the pleasure of being able to seek his advice on legal and personal matters and as a good friend he was always happy and willing to listen to me and offer good advice. He has been my landlord and friend and has provided me with my most stable environment (my office) for over 20 years. I will miss his smile,
friendship and guidance.

Jim and Leah Hennenhoefer are the most precious of people. I know them both personally from living in the same neighborhood of Vista and professionally through the practice of law, and I learned what admirable individuals they are. They graciously allowed me to share their office space upstairs in their suite when I started out my first solo law practice and Leah took me under her "office" wing whilst I practiced law on my own several months pregnant with my second child. I referred many people to Jim as the consummate family law attorney and I have always been in awe of his accomplishments in the field. May God give Jim Eternal Rest and Bless Leah in his absence here on Earth. He will be sorely missed.

My condolences to the family of Jim Hennenhoefer. I met him soon after moving to Carlsbad, CA in 2002. We served as arbitrators in a legal dispute. He impressed me with his quiet command of the issues, the process and his sense of fairness. Not only was he a consummate attorney, he generously gave of his time to bar associations and charitable organizations. His passing leaves a large void in the North County Legal Community.

Although I didn't know Mr. Hennenhoefer, I have the pleasure of knowing & working with his incredible daughter, Jackie as a sales rep for my boutique & area. They resemble so much! She is the finest, so that must be a testiment to the wonderful man & father that he was. Many blessings for Jackie & the entire family as they celebrate his life and adjust to his passing. A giant of a man, in stature, spirit and soul. A true, understanding, non-judgmental, compassionate, kind man, almost always the brightest light in the rooms that were fortunate to have him as an occupant - but he never just occupied space, he filled it with his spirit and personality, joy and laughter, thoughtfulness and pensiveness, always making everyone it in feel welcome and important. A kind man, a kind soul, a sad and huge loss for all of us. Rest in peace, my friend, the world is a lesser place in your absence. Stephen and Laila Kolodny

I was saddened to hear of Jims passing. He and I were best buddies in the early years in St. Louis. He refers to the elementary teacher who had such an influence on his life, that would be Notre Dame Nun Sister Helen Robert, she was such a wonderful mentor to both of us. May you rest in peace my friend and may you have fair winds and following seas on your final journey home.

Jim filled every room with light and laughter, always. The love he shared with Lea was visible whenever they were near. As the daughter of his very close friend and colleague, Sandra J. Morris, it is a tribute to his incredible ability to connect with virtually everyone that I can remember the sound of his voice, his impressive mind, his ability to listen intently and to make everyone with whom he spoke feel special. You could not help but love and admire Jim. He gave his family, friends, and the community so much and has left us too soon. I'm sending my sincere and heartfelt condolences from Seattle to all who were so loved by him. He will live forever in our hearts and his example will continue to make all of us strive to pay it forward Tracy M. Morris.

My dear friend's life can only be described by superlatives. The kindest, most generous, smartest and, my favorite, funniest person. Whenever he entered a room, he was immediately noticed with his great smile and booming laugh. I was so lucky to have been included in his wide circle of friends. Love you, Jim.

He was my big brother and I was so lucky. He was the kindest. sweetest most generous person you would ever want to meet . He lived a great life, had a wonderful wife and a fantastic career. It is heart breaking to lose him. I cant image not talking to him any more or seeing him again. He travelled the world but always made it back to San Diego -----the town he loved. I'll miss you Bobo ( that was what I called him when I was little)

We all know that someday we'll leave this earth. But if, between birth and death, we can do things to help others, build on what those before us accomplished, and try to bring peace, our life will contributed to the betterment of all. Our friend and colleague Jim Hennenhoefer did so much good that one can wonder if he had two or three clones. His love of life, Lea, his family, friends, and everyone he met instantly knew Jim was the "real thing". He was an great example of what one person can do to help others. We are profoundly saddened by Jim's death and cannot imagine how profound this impacts Lea. It is hoped Lea will be warmed and supported by our letting her know that we, too, loved and will miss Jim. While gone, Jim is not - and will not, so long as we live - be forgotten.

He was my eldest brother. He was revered in our family. My mother adored him. He was one of the funniest people, who knew how to laugh. And, he had a very kind heart. Although we, unfortunately, did not have many occasions to enjoy Jim's company, we always welcomed his cheery wave as he drove by, his humorous comments and seeing him walk his beloved dogs in the morning. Jim was a wonderful neighbor and friend....considerate, appreciative and helpful to others in need. We are so sorry for his family's loss and ours and will miss him greatly around the neighborhood.May peace and comfort be found through wonderful memories, loving moments and God's promise of eternal life.

In Jewish tradition we have an obligation to do tikkun olam. Loosely translated, this means to "heal the world," or make it a better place when you depart than when you arrive. Jim has certainly done that. What more can we ask of a life than that?

May his memory be a blessing to Lea and his family.
