After graduating from South Milwaukee H.S. at the age of 17, he received his doctorate from the University of Wisconsin Medical School and received specialty training at the University of Minnesota in Internal Medicine. During this time, he served in the United States Navy under the G.I. Bill after which he re-paid his country by serving in the United States Army. He became a Commanding Officer for the 44th MASH in Korea. He practiced medicine in Covina, California for 30 years and served as the head of the pulmonary department at Intercommunity Hospital. James also lectured in pulmonary diseases at University of Southern California. As a physician, he had a great "bedside manner," and took time with each patient. After retiring to Lake San Marcos, he volunteered at the Palomar College Health Center. He had a big heart for those less fortunate (especially children) and donated to many organizations including the San Diego Zoo and Interfaith. He enjoyed volunteering and fundraising for the Boys and Girls Club of San Marcos, and performed medical missionary work in South America and Mexico. James was a member of the United Church of Lake San Marcos for 22 years, singing with the choir and performing as a soloist. He was also an active leader of the Lake San Marcos Rotary and Kiwanis Clubs. His favorite pastimes were traveling, golf, and singing with the San Marcos Lakers. He was a loving and caring father with a deep and abiding faith in the Lord. James married Loretta "Fitz" Fitzgibbon in 1945, who precedes him in death. He is survived by his son, Gary James Sands who resides in Oregon; daughter, Dyana Preti of Vista; eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m., Sunday, December 18, at the United Church of Lake San Marcos. In lieu of flowers, please contribute to the Interfaith Council of Escondido. Dr. James Sands and his loving wife, Fitz Sands, were my closest friends when I lived at Lake San Marcos I loved both of them very much and they left lasting memories and impessions on me. They had one of the sweetest relationships that I had ever seen and they taught me a great deal about life. I know they are now together with our Lord Jesus Christ and someday I'll meet them in Heaven. Jim and Fitz, I will always love you and I will never forget you !

Dad and I at his 80th birthday party.

I was very close to my Dad, especially after mom passed away 14 years ago. Dad touched many lives with his love and generosity but none more than mine. He adopted me, educated me, gave me a love of music and art, and most of all shared with me his love of God. I will miss him daily but I know that at 86 his body was worn out and he was ready to go into the arms of our Lord. He passed peacefully and simply chose to "Let go and let God." Thank you to all who post memories of him here!
