I am saddened to hear of his passing which I just learned of through a fellow retiree. I worked with John (Hans) for his entire career with the County. He actually worked for the Department of General Services and the Parks Department was one of our clients. We talked often of his travels and compared notes about the most interesting places to visit. He took time off every year to travel, often taking some of his co-workers with him. He was universally loved and admired by everyone he dealt with.

Hans created opportunities for me and so many other hikers to visit the backroads of many countries, giving us lifelong memories. We never got lost. He and Diane carefully looked after each one of us. His kindness was never-ending. This humble man was a great leader and
I was blessed to know him over the years as one of my friends.

I am so sorry to learn of his passing. As a fellow world traveler, we shared many stories of our adventures while volunteering at the airport. He was an amazing man with many interesting tales and I was always impressed with his accurate memory of places he'd visited long ago. Heartfelt condolences to the family.

My dad, Peter Cuthbert, worked with Jon. As a child growing up I remember my father’s fond comments about Jon. I don’t recall if I ever met him, but based on my father’s opinions of him, Jon was a great man and my father enjoyed working with him during their years at San Diego County Parks. Sending sympathy to your family in memory of a great man.

Dear Diane, I offer my condolences on the loss of your exceptional husband. Judging by your excellent account of his life, Hans overcame a youth and young manhood of extreme hardship and many challenges to lead a fulfilling and exciting life exploring the world with you and offering his knowledge to others on walking tours and in volunteer activities. I am glad to see that he lived a good, long life and that you have too! All the best to you and your family,
