John DeLoach Obituary

John Martin DeLoach June 23, 1943 - March 12, 2017 Carlsbad Born in Elizabethton, TN. John joined the Navy at 18 where he served in Japan and Viet Nam. His brother Darrell, joined him in Japan on "brother-duty." In the Navy, John was an electronics technician and flight-crew member on P5M's for VP-50 Sea Plane Squadron. John had been a member of the Mariner Marlin Association ever since. After the Navy, John remained in San Diego. John worked for General Dynamics for 7 years, as a Field Service Engineer. John completed his Bachelor's degree in Justice Administration and followed his passion to become a San Diego Police Officer. John Martin served 27 years with the SDPD and loved every minute of it. During his years with SDPD, he became involved with the San Diego Police Revolver Club and was the President for many years; as well as a "foundation" of the group, for over 40 years. He taught firearms at the police academy for over 30 years; far beyond the time he retired as a Police Detective in 1997. At his retirement, the Police Chief at the time, Jerry Sanders, said that "John taught not only him, but an entire generation of police officers, how to shoot."John had a fabulous and rewarding life with a smile on his face every day. He is survived by his wife Sherry, brother Darrell, sister-in-law Jan, stepdaughter Erin, niece Veronica, her husband Jimmy, and his grandniece and nephew, Cali and Jake, and many cousins. He will be profoundly missed and forever remembered and loved. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Dementia/Alzheimer's Society and/or North Coast Hospice.org

Even after a year it still is a shock on John's passing. Both John and Darrell were excellent sailors to serve with in VP-50. John always had a smile and had a warm positive and sunny disposition. We who knew and flew with John will always have a smile on our faces when we think of him.

I was one of those who was lucky enough to have John teach me how to shoot in the SDPD academy. He was always one of my favorite people. Great smile and laugh. Very patient and a great instructor. He became one of those people I always admired and respected. I'm sorry to hear he is gone. My condolences to his family. He will be fondly remembered by a lot of people.

We will miss our smiling neighbor!! Such a nice person to have as our trusted neighbor. I loved when he would bring us some of his "catch" when he went fishing! Would be so pleased of the catch of the day!

Sorry to hear of John's passing. John and I served together in VP-50 in Japan, San Diego, Philippines and Vietnam. We were both electronic techs. John was an excellent tech and great squadron mate. Just a very nice and easy going man. We met up again at several Marlin/Marnier reunions over the years and both my wife, Linda, and I enjoyed the time spent with John and his brother Darrell. Guess those Tennessee boys are hard to beat! Soon enough we all will be taking that final "hop" into the starry night. Miss you buddy.

A dear friend, John was funny, smart, sweet, kind and gentle. A guys guy while at the same time a renaissance man. Gone too soon but leaving a legacy of goodness behind that will forever be a celebration of his life.
