Drew, Joseph "Joe" Coleman EL CAJON -- Joe was born January 21, 1940 to Elmer Joseph Drew and Violet Coleman Drew in National City, CA, coming home to La Mesa to live all his growing up years. He attended Lemon Avenue School and Helix High School in La Mesa, CA. He attended the University of Wyoming where he met the love of his life, Kay, the very first week of school. After a motorcycle trip to the Panama Canal they married in September 1962. Working at the local paper and on nearby ranches, he graduated in 1963 with a degree in Business Administration. He joined the California National Guard at 17, enrolled in ROTC in college and became a U.S. Army Officer in July 1963. He served two years in the regular U.S. Army Infantry as a 2nd Lieutenant and a 1st Lieutenant. He was trained as an Army Ranger and was a Recon Platoon Leader and a Company Commander. Upon leaving the Army he joined the family business, Drew Ford, started by his father Elmer in 1927. Drew Ford has been ranked as one of the 100 largest volume Ford dealers in the nation for 30 consecutive years. Joe is known for treating his customers and employees fairly. He was active in his business and community life. He helped raise funds for various organizations in the county and served on various boards. He received many honors over the years including La Mesa "Man of the Year" in 1974, Grossmont Healthcare District Honoree of the Year, FFA Honorary Member for his support of the youth AG Program for East County and named the Distinguished Alumnus of the University of Wyoming in 2013. He was elected to the Grossmont High School District Board of Trustees and served as President. He was named a recipient of the 1989 TIME Magazine Quality Dealer Award. He served as Chairman on the National Ford Dealer Council of the Product Planning and Finance Committee. He was a founder of the San Diego Automotive Museum in Balboa Park. His hobbies over the years included hiking, back packing, running marathons, climbing the Matterhorn, riding motorcycles, hunting, fishing, organic gardening, woodworking, and history. Joe loved his family and friends. He will be remembered as a generous, caring husband, father and friend. Joe went home to the Lord on April 9, 2014. He is survived by his beloved wife, Kay; his daughter, Sarah Drew of Mill Valley; his son, Bill and daughter-in-law, Anna of Rancho Santa Fe; three grandchildren, Nicole, Paige and Greta; his sister, Esther Long of Parker Colorado and many nieces and nephews. Joe was such a great friend and to this day I am so saddened by his passing. We share so many great conversations, our common interests of horses, hunting and outdoor experiences! Some interest in hunting in Chihuahua, Mexico, the love him and his wife shared for horseback riding in the east county, the truly tragic passing of his daughter! He was also very instrumental in helping me to fight bullying in Granite Hills and to make an impact and changes. Joe was a truly kind, generous and loving person, that will live in My Heart and mind forever!

I don't know what to write about Joe Drew! There is simply too much to say about him, his wife, Kay, his daughter, Sarah and his son, Bill. Well done, good and faithful servant! I think my heart should be broken a bit, but after attending his memorial service, I felt elated, not sad. I relived the joy of his life and all that he gave to all of us. I truly don't know how anyone could be sad about Joe's passing, when he gave so much to so many and made all of us better people because of him! His life was a true celebration. I am convinced that everyone who's life he touched, will continue to live out his legacy. Thank you, Joe, for teaching me, guiding me and making me a better person. I will NEVER forget you and all that you taught me. Though you are, in a way, "gone" you are never far from those who love you, cherish you, and have learned from you. We take the challenge to be everything that you wanted us to be and we will continue on with the knowledge that you are always "watching" us and encouraging us to be the best that we can be! I love you beyond words. I live my good life because of you. I am not wealthy, but I am clothed in riches because of you. You were my mentor when you walked on this earth, and you are my mentor, still and forever. Thank you Joe, Kay, Sarah, Anne, and Bill. You have no idea how many lives you have touched and continue to touch. I look forward to "hearing" from Joe in my daily prayers. Lodi

Mr. Drew has been mentor to me most of my adult life. I remember when he interviewed me almost 30 years ago he was wearing jeans and cowboy boots. We shared of love of horses together. There were many reasons to respect Mr. Drew but the one that has stayed with me the most is how he always took care of his customers. He always tried to do what was right for others. HIs business ethic and love of family always reminded me of my father. I miss my father so much and will miss Mr. Drew so much too! God Bless you Mr. Drew and thank you for all the enrichment you have added to my life.

It has been the biggest comfort to me since I moved to California knowing that I have family close by. Joe and his family opened their door to me when I first moved here from Ireland and I am both humbled and grateful for everything that they have done for me since.
Joe was proud of his Irish heritage, but the Drew's in Ireland were equally as proud of Joe's achievements. I knew of Joe and Kay long before I met them. My grandparents spoke highly of them and remembered them fondly when they visited Ireland in the 80's.
Joe...Thank you for all your advise, support and kindness...and especially for making me feel closer to home. It really is a privilege to have known you!
God speed you on your journey...

I have been honored and blessed to have known Joe throughout my life. He was a true gentleman, a brilliant, great and caring man, and such a generous and wonderful person. He was always helping others, and possessed such a keen sense of justice, fairness, high standards, and integrity. I have so many fond memories of when we were young working together during our high school summer vacations at Drew Ford in La Mesa; maintaining the trucks for the Irrigation District in El Cajon; maintaining propane tanks within the County; flying with Elmer to Los Angeles to pick-up and drive back through Laguna Beach to La Mesa two new Ford tanker trucks. We worked hard from 4 in the morning to make sure we had time to have fun during the rest of the day; we worked hard but we also had fun together. Always grabbing time together whenever we could to share our friendship.

He was a lifelong friend who was truly a blessing in our lives. He will be sadly missed, but always remembered with a big smile and his memory will be in our hearts and minds forever. We send our love and condolences to his wife, Kay, daughter, Sarah, son Bill and his wife Anna and their daughters, and his sister, Esther. With love, Neil and Janet Thompson

Mr. Joe Drew while he was on the board of the Grossmont Union High School District, around 1966, He visited Santana High School's Vocational facility. I only met him that one time, as a teacher in that Department I was impressed by his sincere concern for the non-college prep students . This was very rare for any administrator at that time. His sincere concern and follow up with changes in our program was appreciated.

Joe Drew was a friend and fellow Kiwanians. He was one of the most truly honest and caring men I have known. Because of that fact, among his other traits, our family has proudly patronized his family dealership. I know his son, Bill, will follow in his giant footsteps. We will miss this great man!

Joe was a great man whose kind nature and willingness to do the right thing was so inspiring. I enjoyed working with him on the Veterans Wall of Honor in Alpine, and helping him to publish his Vegetable Garden book. My prayers are with Kay and family, so many of us already miss him.

So many memories of this great man. I met him through my Dad who took me his friend Joe Drew. I ordered my first brand new car in 1971. The PINTO had to be custom ordered and took 6 weeks. Finally got the call that the car had been delivered. When I arrived at the Drew Roundhouse, I found out that Joe and my Dad were out test driving my car...what a hoot! Joe drove the car back into the Roundhouse showroom floor and we did a photo shoot. Forty-three years later I still have the photos. I have purchased about 10 autos from Drew since my first one in 1971. He was my favorite go to person and always talked about his family and showed me pictures...he was so proud of his family. I will miss you Joe and will continue to do business with Bill at the best Dealership ever!
My thoughts, prayers and condolences to the Drew family.

I first met Joe when I was in my second or third year of teaching at Helix High School. Joe was on the high school board and he dropped by the Industrial Arts Office while we were having lunch. He sat down and asked us how things were going. I came to know Mr. Drew well as the years went by. He was a big supporter of the Automotive Program at Cuyamaca College which I founded in 1979. Joe served on our original Ford ASSET Program advisory committee in 1988.
Mr. Drew was a kind, hard working and very honest man. We have lost one of the great ones! My condolences to the Drew Family

Loved his passion for Life! I will be forever grateful for the impact he had on my kids lives. He was an amazing Grandfather. He spoiled them with time and always made their visits an experience, from finding arrowheads on the property, teepee, tire swing, gardening, designing - building and painting treehouse, horses, molding with clay, sketching, woodworking, swimming, fishing, camping, hiking, reading! My kids always came home dirty from playing outside and HAPPY! He will be missed but the memories he left us with will be with us forever!

Joe Drew led through example. He taught me over the years what loyalty meant. His commitment to having absolutely satisfied customers is legendary. After my own father, Joe is the man I respect the most. Joe Drew was a man who did the right thing because it was the right thing, not because anyone was watching. The world lost a great man this week. My heartfelt condolences to the Drew family and all my co workers in the Drew Ford-Hyundai family.
