JOSEPH ROSA Obituary

ROSA, JOSEPH WILLIAM Joseph William Rosa died peacefully in his sleep Wednesday, February 23, 2011, after a long, heroic battle with cancer. Mr. Rosa enjoyed an exciting, full life. He was born on December 30,1932 in Las Gatos, California, to Ana and Frank Rosa. Joe was a born leader and was president of student bodies at Dana Jr. High, Pt. Loma High School and San Diego State College. Joe was a Lt. Commander in the U.S. Navy, Ret. He had a zest for life and traveled all around the world. After graduation from Thunderbird Foreign Trade School in Arizona, he worked for Citi Bank in Rio, Brazil. Returning to the States, Mr. Rosa married Mary H. "Suzy" Dunn. They sailed to Hawaii on their honeymoon and stayed for 13 years. Mr. Rosa was the ex-Vice President of Pioneer Savings and Loan in Honolulu. Also, he was President of La Jolla Savings, International Savings and Heartland Savings in San Diego County. Joe is survived by his wife, Sue, and sons, Keoni Rosa and his partner, John Clark, Kekoa Rosa and his wife, Molly, Keoki Rosa, and Kimo Rosa and daughters Malia Rosa, Nalani Wineman and her husband John, Maile Samek and her husband Vic, Moana Rogerson and her husband Joe, and Leilani Rosa and 18 grandchildren. In San Diego, Joe is survived by his sisters, Alyce McMenomy, Mary Jones, and Olivia Ledbetter. Joe followed his dreams and made them a reality - including a beach house in Hawaii, Real Estate Development in La Playa, a farm, tractor and vineyard in Central Oregon, RV travel and great pride that all nine of his children graduated from universities around the world. Joe loved real estate and spent hours developing gardens and watering, while puffing on a cigar. Joe is loved and remembered for his great faith, his kind and friendly personality and his strong commitment to family, friends and community. Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, April 16, at 10 a.m. at St. Agnes Church, 1140 Evergreen. Reception to follow.

Joe was the ultimate Gentleman as my High School date at dances, beach parties and double dates with his sister Mary. I admired Joe for his Intelligence, humor, respectfulness and as a wholesome fun young man. There are people you meet and never remember and those you NEVER FORGET, I've never forgotten Joe. It was a pleasure meeting Mr. Rosa & his wife Mary on a cross country trip I did back in the summer of 2009. I am a good friend of his son Kekoa in Minneapolis and was lucky to stay for a couple of nights in his daughter Malia's home in Bend, OR. Mr. & Ms. Rosa's home has one of the most impressive and beautiful backdrop of forests and mountains I've ever seen. May he rest in peace.

Joe Rosa was just amazing in every way! Growing up (throughout high school, college and beyond...) Joe was such a kind and warm presence. He would always ask questions about what was going on in our lives, offer advice and a joke to boot. His sense of humor and laugh were so infectious.
He had the gift of finding joy in life and he will be truly missed. It is no exaggeration to say that Joe Rosa was one of a kind. My love and prayers go out to the entire Rosa family.

My heartfelt condolences to the Rosa Family.
Joe Rosa was a fun-loving friend to me while attending Point Loma High in
1947-48. Joe shared his buoyant sense of humor and kindness. I was proud to have had Joe as a high school friend.
God will hold him tightly and he shall ascend with Angeles.
Joe was blessed with a beautiful family and wonderful life.

For me, at age 10 when he visit the Azores Islands, he was like a great icon. When coming to the States and Joe and Sue visit with the family, it was always such special times Joe's laughter was contagious. Love the memories of him in my heart. Big hug Sue.
