Marina Basile Obituary

BASILE, MARINA PANZICA Marina Panzica Basile, devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt and friend passed away peacefully on Friday, December 27, 2002. Mom was born on October 23, 1909, in Termini Imerese Alto, Sicily and immigrated, as a small child, with her father to Burgettstown, Penn., where she met and married the love of her life, Bill. In 1936, the couple moved and settled in San Diego, Calif., where they raised their five children Louise Courtier Sikorski, Marie and husband Tony Cefalu, Bill and wife Melanie Basile, Ronald Basile and Anne and husband William Nieves, all of San Diego. With her strong faith, mom led a religious life centered around her family and the church. She was Mother of the Year in 1977, a Lifetime member of the Mercy Auxiliary, and a devoted member of the Archconfraternity of St. Joseph ' s Cathedral. She also enjoyed her garden, card games, family picnics, and Sunday dinners. All family gatherings centered around Grandma ' s dinner table. Although 93 years old, Mom remained vital and sharp until she suddenly fell ill last week. Her surviving family, one brother, two sisters, five children, two son-in-laws, one daughter-in-law, eleven grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and dear friends will sorely miss her. Her memories will forever remain alive as we carry forth with the many traditions and values she so lovingly passed on to us. Visitation: 4-8 p.m.; Rosary 7 p.m., January 2, 2003, Merkley Mitchell Mortuary, 3655 Fifth Ave., San Diego. Mass: 11 a.m., January 3, 2003, St. Joseph ' s Cathedral, 1535 Third Ave., SD In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Sisters of Saint Joseph of Carondelet, 11999 Chalon Road, Los Angeles, CA 90049-1524.
