Robert Hippen Obituary

HIPPEN, Jr., ROBERT LEE Dr. Robert Lee Hippen, Jr., M.D. passed away on September 4, 2008, in Portland, Oregon. He was born in San Diego, California, on August 18, 1952. Bob grew up in Mission Valley when it was a rural area outside of San Diego dotted with dairy farms, horse stables and baseball fields. He explored a place where coyotes, skunks, opossums and a European White Deer could live and browse on the hills surrounding his house. He graduated San Diego High School in 1970 where he made strong friendships that lasted his whole life. Bob attended U.C. Irvine and graduated with his bachelor's degree from Immaculate Heart College. He went back to school to do his premed at Cal State Los Angeles. Then he followed his father's footsteps and graduated the University of Tennessee Medical School in 1983. He became a Diagnostic Radiologist then settled in Salem, Oregon, where he practiced with Kaiser Permanente for 20 years. Bob's interests, talents and hobbies were eclectic, he was a true renaissance man. He learned to play trumpet in elementary school and that started a life long love of music. He learned to play the tuba, guitar, piano, flute, saxophone, recorder, harmonica, the ukulele, and the synthesizer. Bob was also a poet and was inspired by, among other things, his son Henry's birth. Bob made documentary films about people near him who he loved. With Henry's mother, he designed his house in Salem. He was an enthusiastically active San Diego High School alumnus. He and his friends from high school camped yearly in the Anza Borrego Desert. He also loved to hike in the forests of Oregon. Bob's more recent interests included creating "DiegoLand," a virtual city, modeled on San Diego, in cyberspace on "Second Life." Using space on "Second Life," Bob had San Diego landmarks like the California Tower in Balboa Park and the Point Loma Light House rendered so "Second Life" players' avatars could live and play in them. Stories describing "Diegoland" appeared in the San Diego Union Tribune and the San Diego Reader. He is survived by his wife, Jenny Hippen, his son, Henry Diachi Hippen, and Henry's mother, Mika Hippen. He is also survived by his sister, Linda Hippen Reynolds and her husband, Jamie Reynolds, his brother Kurt Bowling Hippen, and his wife, Gale Smith Hippen, his nieces Becky Matlock and Jenny Matlock, her husband Thomas Kashade and their son Max, as well as his nephews Will Robert Hippen and Jensen Lee Hippen and dear family friend Betty Oats. He was predeceased by his mother Dorothy Turner Hippen, his father Robert Lee Hippen M.D., his uncle, Will Hippen Jr., his uncle, Henry Turner M.D., cousin Steven Turner M.D., and dear family friend, Faye Ponder. Services will be held at First Congregational Church, 700 Marion Street, N.E., Salem on Thursday, September 11, 2008, at 2:00 p.m. The location for the reception will be announced following the Service. The family suggests that donations may be made to the "Henry Hippen Education Fund" at the MaPS Credit Union. Please send checks to: 1863 Berndt Hill Drive, South Salem, OR 97302.

I knew Bob at San Diego High School. Even though we never spoke much, I remember him as a serious and studious guy. We never spoke after high school, but I knew he was the type of person that would succeeed in life. It is sad for me to learn that he is no longer with us. My belated condolences to his family.

In my mind, I see Bob with a smile on his face and kind words on his lips. Its been many years. Time and distance separated me a friend and colleague who added laughter to younger days in Memphis. Thinking of him back then brings a gentle warmth and calm to me, even in the sadness learning of his passing. Peace to his family.

To all of Bob's family:

I just want you to know that he is not forgotten. I think about him often. I remember his smile, his humor, and his kindness. I miss that little guy from elementary school!

I would like to thank all who have said so many kind words about my brother Bob. I really had no idea how many people he had touched here in the real world and in his virtual world until his passing. He did not tell me what all he was involved in. Now I know a large part of his influence. I feel I can speak for all his remaining family in saying,
Thank you all very much.

I met Dr. Robert Hippen in May right before he and Jenny’s wedding. I am Jenny’s friend from Los Angeles, California. Jenny and Bob invited me to stay at their home in Salem. During my staying at the house, Bob showed me what a wonderful husband and great father he was. He was so very happy at that time. He was very warm, very kind, and very caring. He was a tender loving man to his wife Jenny. He was a wonderful proud father to his son Henry. His death was too sudden and was a great lost to his family and his friends. He will be missed very much by all of us.
Peace be with you, Bob.

Robert Hippen was kind enough to host a poetry group at the Salem Library a while back, which gave some local poets a place to trade poems. I very much enjoyed the meetings I attended.

He was good-spirited and generous. I knew him through the sl Red Cross auction. He paid a lot for a painting I did of my visit to Anza -Borrego desert, but I had not known that he went there too. deep sympathy to his family.

I knew Bob through his 3d created vision of San Diego called Diegoland in Second Life. I live in San Diego and attend medical school so he and I used to have some wonderful chats about life in LaJolla and of course about medicine. During the largest wildfires in California history Bob organized a donation fund to collect money to donate to the red cross. He ran a very good campaign and collected a very nice sum. His kindness and generosity will be missed from our planet and I'm deeply saddened to have lost a friend. My deepest sympathy to Bob's family though we knew him best as "Champion Valiant" and he knew me as "LeCompte Chemistry".

September 21, 2008

It was truly a shock to hear about Bob's untimely passing! I first met Bob in Seventh Grade at Roosevelt Jr. High. We became friends & Bob Davis & I became Bob's campaign managers when he ran for 9th Grade President. After Bob won the election, he became a leader & organizer of our social group & over the years would get us out to the Anza Borrego on numerous camping trips, or to High School reunions, & even put together our 50th Birthday gala at Martha's house. I have had numerous good times with Bob, but I especially remember the laughter we shared & the humour, that would often bring tears. I was also taken by Bob's talent for writing poetry and playing & writing music (on several diverse instruments too), his travels around the world, & his love for Henry. Bob was a kind, sensitive, loving, and generous soul. Yes he could be difficult too (!), but who isn't at times? My deepest sympathies go out to Bob's family. The world has become a little emptier now without Bob. His memory will always endure.

I am a transcriptionist with Kaiser
Suunyside. When I was trained to transcribe radiology Dr. Hippen was one of the toughest to understand, but once I got 'em, I got 'em. I feel as though I know this man even though we never met as Mika was pregnant at the same time as I was with my first child. He started every day's dictation off with a hearty good morning, a weather report, every doctor's appointment, ultrasounds, etc. After Henry's birth, I enjoyed hearing about his milestones. What I know of a man I did not know personally is that he loves his Henry! My sincere condolences to the family.

Thank you all for your love and support during this most difficult time. Your kind words and gestures are deeply appreciated and comforting us everyday.

Bob
Bob was a trouble maker. Often times he was unnegotiable and a stubborn man.
How many of you felt frustrated and upset with him?
But he was funny. He was a kind and generous man.
How many of you were touched by his kindness? He always had good intention. He meant well. He had the warmest heart.
Bob was a great man.
We love him very much.

I was recently informed of Bob's passing through a classmate (Debbie Seaburg) from our days at Roosevelt Junior High. I remember taking Science classes with Bob, and having to collect insects for a display box. Since Bob lived in what was then very rural Mission Valley, what better place to find these critters than down near the river that ran though Mission Valley. We spent several weekends putting the bugs in glass jars with formaldehyde, then later pinning them in our boxes. Mission Beach south, parties at the house, and of course, science. Thanks for great memories, Bob.

I am an old friend of Bob's from high school in San Diego, and also Immaculate Heart College in Los Angeles. It has been so wonderful to read these messages from so many people Bob touched during his life. I will always remember his persistence, his risk-taking and creativity and his deep longing for connection and understanding. Oh, yes - his wonderful sense of humor, the way he could always laugh at himself and find the funny bone in any situation. My deepest condolences to his family. May you be at peace, Bob.

To all of Bob's friends and colleagues, I thank you so much for your kind words and thoughts. We, the members of Bob's family, are still reeling from the shock of his sudden death and reading your messages has wrapped us in a blanket of comfort. The time you have taken to share your fond memories will help us find our way back from the grief we are feeling right now. Thank you all so much.

I met Bob in Los Angeles in 1975. We, along with several other friends, shared a home for nearly four years in the Hollywood area while we attempted to understand and improve our lives. Bob worked at various jobs while I worked as an auto mechanic. We would play music together and played basketball on the same local recreation team. He inspired me to return to school as he did, in order to obtain my pre-medical cousework. After he left, we spoke infrequently but Bob was instrumental in letting me know it was never to late to reach for your dreams. Today I am a successful pediatric gastroenterologist working for Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in New Hampshire. He was a good, kind friend who has left us too soon. I did had the pleasure of meeting his father and brother Kurt years ago. My sincere sympathy goes out to his entire family.

Bob, or "Hippen" as he was known to me given the abundance of Bob's around, was an old and dear childhood friend of my father. The times that I've spent with him throughout my life were always memorable; whether it was playing bumper pool, hearing stories about him and my father when they were kids, or his latest musical opus. It is obvious that he will be missed by many. My sympathies go out to his friends and family.

I worked with Bob on his Secondlife Diegoland project for a year. He was compassionate, kind and giving and had a wonderful sense of humor. He would listen respectfully and always had words of encouragement to everyone. It was a gift to know him and to be touched by his spirit.

My soul will always be touched by his spirit, remembering his humor, his generousity and his wisdom.

Bob and I knew each other for over 50 years, as we were in Kindergarten together at Florence Elementary School, and then we both attended Roosevelt Junior High. He always liked to say, he was Miss Ely's "teacher's pet" in Kindergarten, as he always behaved and loved to assist her in any way. I am just totally shocked by his passing! He and I would talk at least once a year to catch-up, and we had dinner together a few years ago when I was in Salem. My thoughts and prayers go out to his son, Henry, and his family, that he loved dearly. Bob was such a talented, bright guy, with such a great sense of humor! He will be greatly missed by all of us!

Hiking in the Borrego Desert

Bob Davis

September 11, 2008

I will always treasure the memories of our numerous trips to the Borrego Desert badlands. Bob was often the "organizer", calling his San Diego buddies to prod them into scheduling a few days each year to bake in the sun, hike to Inspiratioin Point, ride in a rented jeep up Wildcat Canyon, climb up "Bench Hill" to watch the sunset, and to just sit around the fire at night talking and watching the moon and the stars shine brightly onto the desert floor. Trips to the desert with my life-long friends will always be special, but they won't be the same without Bob Hippen. He was a special friend and a unique person. I hope to someday introduce his son Henry to the places his dad loved going to for so many years with his many friends.

Bob got me interested in playing for his Tennis Team in 1998 (Jokers!) and I will remember him for his fairnes, wit and his caring. He plotted and planned and took us all the way to th e Nationals in Tucson. Alas, I got sick and couldn't deliver.
But he was caring even when he had his hands full.

To a family I never met......I share your sorry when a loved one passes on. I knew Bob in H.S. and thought of him as a friend. He would always find me during one of our reunions and give me a hearty "HELLO!" And how's it going. We would bring each other up-to-speed. I will miss seeing him and remember those memories of a thoughtful and kind kid who grew into a very decent gentleman.

I had a special friendship with Bob. I worked in the department for many years. I would keep him laughing with my "world famous" cartoons of co- workers and current events. After hearing of the news I needed a lift and pulled out the over stuffed shoebox of cartoon memories. The laughter was healing. When ever I feel down and think of Bob I will pull out the "laughter box". He will be dearly missed. Kevin

I worked with Bob from the time he came to the Skyline Medical Office. He was a boss, a colleague and a friend. I will miss him greatly and send my sympathies to his family.

One thing that is missing in what I've read so far is Bob's enormous sense of humor. I haven't seen Bob or his funny beagle Bret in so many years I can't count them, but he made me laugh pretty hard at a time when laughter was hard to come by in our lives.

Bob (Hippen) spent a lot of time at our house when he was in San Diego. I haven't seen him in years but was just speaking about him to a friend two days ago. He left a life-long impression on me. I am very saddened to hear that Bob passed away. No words are enough to show my appreciation for his help over the years reviewing X-rays films. He was never hurried and always had a little extra time to inquiry about things other than medicine. In particular he was very interested in ways of my native country of Brazil. What a kind man he was. We lost not just a colleague or a friend but someone difficult to be replaced. My deepest condolences to his family.

I know Bob from when we were in kindergarten together. I have vivid memories of visiting him at his house in Mission Valley. I worked with Dr Hippen for the entire 20 years he was with Kaiser in Salem. I share many memories . My husband and I attended his wedding to Mika. Many Christmas partys at Skyline and his funny gifts for the exchange. He had a thing about us not blowing out the candles on birthday cakes, (he thought we might spit on the cake). He always made me laugh. Henry's birth,he was so proud of Henry. I will be out of state on Thursday ,so will not be able to attend his services but I will be thinking of him and Henry and the rest of his family.

I will miss hearing The Doctor's voice streaming through my headphones @ KSMC Transcription Dept. Sometimes he would share a story about Henry or about the weather that day or an interesting "eclectic" view of a current event before he began dictating radiology cases. I always wanted to meet him in person and thank him for that.

Condolences and prayers of comfort to family and friends...

This morning my wife Sharon and I read of Dr. Hippen's passing; not as a friend or relative but as former San Diego residents. When Robert was a young boy enjoying the beauty and wildlife of Mission Valley we would be stopping at the local farms for fresh tomatoes and eggs and always watching for the white deer that roamed the hills below the Presido. In our entrance hallway to our home here in Gresham hang paintings of our two favorite San Diego landmarks; the California Tower in Balboa Park and the Point Loma Lighthouse on Point Loma. With these common fond memories we feel a special bond with Dr. Heppen and are saddened at his loss and pass along our condolences to his family and loved ones. Sincerely Larry and Sharon Beaver.
