ROBERTA HARTNACK Obituary

HARTNACK, ROBERTA De LUCE February 23, 1918 to November 11, 2011 Roberta De Luce Hartnack died peacefully of natural causes on Friday, November 11, 2011, at Casa Dorinda in Santa Barbara, California. She was 93. Roberta was born on February 23, 1918 to Myrtle and Robert De Luce in Oakland, California. She grew up in Los Angeles graduating from Belmont High School in 1935. Roberta graduated from UCLA in 1939, majoring in political science. On September 6, 1939 Roberta married Carl E. Hartnack, a fellow student from Belmont High. They had a wonderful marriage of 60 years before Carl died in January 2000. Roberta was an important element in Carl's successful rise from bank teller to Chairman of the Board of Security Pacific Bank, his only employer since graduating from high school. Roberta and Carl had three children, Richard (Dail), Robert (Marsha) and Gretchen (Marshall Milligan). Roberta was a gracious and elegant woman who was devoted to her husband and children. She was a role model for her children and many others. Roberta was active in the Symphony Association and the Opera Guild in San Diego where they lived in the 1960's as well as the Assistance League, the Blue Ribbon for the L.A. Music Center and the California Associates in Los Angeles. She was Carl's essential partner during his board of trustees leadership at the University of Southern California and elsewhere. Roberta enjoyed travel and, with her husband, visited all seven continents. Roberta moved from Los Angeles to Casa Dorinda shortly after Carl's death. Roberta was predeceased by her older brother, Daniel, in 2002. In addition to her three children, Roberta leaves seven grandchildren, five great grandchildren, and her younger brother, Richard. There will be a private family celebration of her life. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Myrtle Hickey De Luce Memorial Scholarship Fund at UCLA, the James Zumberge Endowment Fund at University of Southern California, Stanford Graduate School of Business, Marlborough School and The Thacher School.
