Rodrigo Munoz Obituary

Rodrigo A Munoz MD

Solana Beach
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father, Rodrigo Munoz, former President of the American Psychiatric Association, and former President of the San Diego Medical Society. Our father was an incredible and inspiring man, always championing the underdog and living life on his terms. Our father was born and raised in a small town in Colombia. From a dyslexic boy who could not read at age 12 to an internationally known expert, professor and prolific author in Psychiatry, our father scaled heights - and faced challenges - with his trademark big smile and even bigger laugh. He fought discrimination personally and on behalf of other foreign medical graduates; he battled for mental health parity; he championed the homeless by arranging a taxi to pick them up once a week and bringing them to his office for medical care. Like all of us, he too failed but had his well-worn phrase ready, "The farthest I can fall is the floor." And he got up. He loved life. Even on the darkest days of his illness, he always spoke about everything that was good in the world. We will always miss him and always be inspired by him. He is survived by his wife Gaby, and his son Roddy, and daughters Lisa, and Julie. March 21, 1939 - November 28, 2020

My condolences to the family. Dr. Munoz helped me move forward in life and career. He was not only my doctor, he became somewhat of a mentor and friend. I always liked our chats about life, akin to speaking to a wisened Sage. Godspeed my friend.

Dr. Munoz was a wonderful, kind, caring psychiatrist to work with as an RN. He was good to the nurses and all of the staff who worked with his patients. My condolences to his family and colleagues.

Dr. Munoz was a dear friend and colleague to my father, who spoke about Dr. Munoz with such fondness, both personally and professionally; he had the highest esteem for him. It was with great sadness that I learned the news. May the family find comfort in knowing what beautiful person he was, and how he impacted so many lives through his profession, care and kindness. With care.

Condolences on his passing. Your father was such a kind man and one my own father admired and respected deeply as both a colleague and friend. This is a beautiful and moving tribute to his life.

I first met Rod in 1968 when he was in charge of the ER for the Malcom Bliss MHC and I was a first year resident at Wash.U. He was a great and willing teacher. Our paths crossed frequently after we both ended up in San Diego where I followed his upward career in Psychiatry. My sympathy to all his family.
